Can someone help me find a present for someone really awkward?

My Dad's birthday is coming up and I always find him an absolute nightmare to buy for. I also only have a limited budget of approx £20. It would also have to be delivered to him, I can't take it in person.

He's an alcoholic - so no booze

He's diabetic - so no sweets

He hasn't read any of the many carefully chosen books I've bought him, despite previously being a vicarious reader

I've done the DVD thing to death

He's had pictures of the kids in nice frames, don't think he classes that as an actual present

He hates house things

I'm really stuck now!!

A shirt? Nice socks? I’d be stumped too. Hopefully someone else with come along with some ideas that are actually good!

Hmmm tricky...
A scarf?
A watch? (You can get them quite cheaply. I got my DD one from top shop for under a tenner)
A jumper or shirt from H&M?
Good luck!

A goat gift card from Oxfam. They supply a goat to a family in Africa, he gets a card to tell him all about the scheme and how much difference it makes.

LaTomatina · 24/09/2020 20:14

Leather driving gloves

nevertrustaherdofcows · 24/09/2020 20:14

He may not be that grateful, but at least your £20 will be doing some good, unlike the unread books.

fallfallfall · 24/09/2020 20:15

my dad was the same, just buy the booze. smaller size and maybe something a bit higher quality. it's sad but it's what he would like despite the fact it will most likely lead to his demise.
i would send it along with some pistachios and a diabetic treat like candy or what ever he enjoys (even if it's sardines).

Findmeonetsy · 24/09/2020 20:15

Haha just came to comment then remembered my name...so I am going to sound like I work for them here, but I get a lot of things from Etsy when I am stuck. Has he got any interests? I have got a gardening hamper before which was lovely. Or the letterbox type gifts are really nice, although a lot do have sweet things inside there are loads of combinations. Plus you are helping out a small business in the process

HeyMicky · 24/09/2020 20:15

Without knowing any of his interests, some things I have bought over the last few years:

Japanese gardening knife
Magnetic wrist band for screws
Digital meat thermometer
Online baking course
Sous vide
Jigsaw roll
Smart shaving set
Heated eye mask
Picture hanging tool
Hand made knife
Canvas log carrier
Bellows for the fire
Heat distributing fan for the wood burning stove
Headphones stand
Smart Panama hat

ThePlantsitter · 24/09/2020 20:16

Does he like plants? Can you make him a macrame plant hanger or summat?

Amazon gift card and then your gift to yourself should be to expend less emotional effort on someone who doesn’t appreciate it 💐

Spied · 24/09/2020 20:24

If he drives those nice valet wipes for the car

goose1964 · 24/09/2020 20:33

My dad is dead hard to buy for. This year I've seen some painted slate coasters on Etsy so I'm getting him those for Christmas.

HollowTalk · 24/09/2020 20:35

Tbh, if he's an alcoholic then nothing else you buy him will be seen as a treat.

OchonAgusOchonO · 24/09/2020 20:42

I can't believe the posters telling you to buy booze for an alcoholic!

I usually end up buying a shirt or t-shirt for my father. Really boring but he appreciates the thought if not the actual piece of clothing.

underneaththeash · 24/09/2020 20:44
