Is this a mezuzah?

We've just bought a house that was empty many years from a deceased estate and this was nailed into the door frame. Other than just throwing it in the bin, should I give it to a synagoge/ post it anywhere?

Is this a mezuzah?

Give it to the synagogue. There are rituals for disposing of them. And yes, it is. I think.

Fressia123 · 24/09/2020 12:48

Yes, it is. It will have a scroll inside. The best thing is to donate it to a synagogue. You can always keep it it's just a blessing that asks for G-d's protection

JamieLeeCurtains · 24/09/2020 12:50

Yes it is, and the synagogue will bury it. Or you could respectfully bury it, if you feel comfortable.

Wrap it in cloth first.

Our house has them. We have just left them there as being part of the house. I love the idea that they bless the home and family in it and there doesn't seem to be a downside to leaving them alone

I used to work for a Jewish firm. Several office doors had them which was kind of nice.

Thanks everyone. I've looked up mezuzah's, but found none that looked remotely like this one, hence wasnt 100% sure. I cant see any scroll or writing other than what looks like 'ET'. We might just keep it there. If we did remove it though, I wanted to be respectful if there was a proper disposal method used.

That's not ET, it is Shaddai in Hebrew, which is a mnemonic for "Guardian of the doors of Israel" If you take it off there should be a scroll inside...

Elouera · 24/09/2020 20:02

I'll check tomorrow if there is a scroll hidden inside somewhere.

It will, they all do. If you remove it please do it before sunset or on Sunday.

Aisforharlot · 25/09/2020 08:58

Yep, you can keep it there if you like! Looks cool.

Aisforharlot · 25/09/2020 09:00

Are there any more through the house/ on the back door?

Elouera · 28/09/2020 09:54

Yes, there is a little scroll at the back! No others through the house though, just that one at the front. We plan to leave it there. It looks nothing like any others when I googled them, and fits the quirkiness of the house very well.
