This is really annoying me. I clearly (well, not that clearly or I'd remember the title) remember this book. I think would have been 80s. I was sure it was a brambly hedge one because of the type of illustrations etc but doesn't seem to be.
Here's the plot. All the lovely woodland animals are having some sort of autumn festival and weasels secretly steal all their stuff and the animals follow the cart tracks and toffee wrappers to a place in the wood where the weasels are sitting round a campfire eating toffee. The animals (I suspect the main character was some sort of mouse) stick a jack o lantern on a stick and scare the weasels away and then take the cart home. I have an idea it's got spooky in the title but I'm not certain.

I'm sure I didn't imagine this book, please help!

It sounds really familiar (def not brambly hedge but I know what you mean) I will see if it's one of my old ones

The Molly Brett picture books are rather like Brambly Hedge, with lovely woodland creature stories. Could possibly be one of hers?

Both very similar but not Molly Brett or little grey rabbit (although I did love lgr, I liked the one with the gypsy selling stuff and also when they went ice skating). Thanks for input though! This is going to drive me mad.....
