Can new job tell old job?

I had a job interview today for a similar role to the one I do already. The interviewer mentioned in passing that he used to work with and still knows my boss. I don't really want the new job if offered; I didn't really like the vibe and have decided I want to stay were I am. But could he tell my boss that I've been looking?

No he should not do this without permission. You might have given permission though eg in an online application form? Unusual to give permission unless job offer is made & accepted.

I haven't accepted the job offer. Just sent my CV and had an interview. He made it seem like he would be offering me the job. At which point I will turn it down. Just wondered if as they are friendly he could tell my boss informally? I suppose he could. So more wondering whether he would?
