Dh and I were remembering back to the 2002 poll of the Greatest Briton. You may remember that Winston Churchill was voted the top position. We were thinking he probably wouldn't be now, what with negative attitudes towards his colonial side, plus the fact a lot of people who would have voted for him as they lived during the war would now be dead.

Anyway, it prompted us to go through the whole list of the top 100, saying whether we thought each person would go up or down or stay about the same. The list is here if you want to play along.

So who do you think would go up or down?

And more to the point, who do you think would be on the list now who wasn't in 2002. The obvious contenders I can think of are Andy Murray, James Dyson, and probably a smattering of celebrities e.g. Helen Mirren and Judy Dench.

Cheers tectonicplates. I previewed and it seemed to work then but I can see it doesn't now.

I would hope Bob Geldof would no longer be on the list. He thinks too much of himself.

I would want to see Sir David Attenborough and Captain Tom on the 1 and 2 spots in that order.

It’s of its time isn’t it? Some of the celebrities feel a bit less current now.

As an aside, I had no idea Isaac Newton was so dashing.

I don't know. He reminds me a bit of Jeremy Vine.

I can't see David Beckham making it to a 2020 list.

Stephen Hawking might go up as he's since died so his reputation is 'sealed'.

Diana Princess of Wales would probably drop as no one under the age of about 30 is likely to remember her.

J K Rowling would probably go up as there's been so much franchising of her 'Harry Potter' series since 2002.

Maggie Thatcher likely to drop for similar reasons to Diana.

Tony Blair would drop because he's not much in the public eye now.

I'd hope to see some black Britons on a 2020 list - there are none from 2002! Sir Trevor MacDonald, Dame Shirley Bassey and perhaps some historical British abolitionists as a few examples that could be on the voting list.

Given that he's not actually British, I would hope not. Same with Bono.

What is it with ye appropriating successful Irish people? It's not like ye don't have a big enough population to have stick with yere own.
