Starting a MeetUp group?

Has anyone started a Meetup group or similar?

I'd really like to start a (small) group but wanted to know if there was anything to look out for? Is it just a matter of putting it out there and seeing if anyone is interested?

I haven't, but my friend's daughter started one up for young women (early twenties) to meet up for drinks, dinner, friendship. I think the first couple of times, two or three people turned up and I believe there are a few more now. I don't think there were any "problems," but the originator of the group had to have the confidence to turn up to the meeting point and accept that no one might come.
