Just what we needed as the nights draw in/more lockdowns happen.

Yay!

My vacuum cleaner is still outside in the garden after I sucked up two, yes TWO, giant house spiders on Friday that were the size of large mice. I'm panicking because a. are they still alive in the vacuum? b. what do I do if I see another one as my vacuum is isolating? I don't own a shotgun or a flame thrower. My dog is useless.

BunnyLovesBananas · 22/09/2020 21:17

I saw a large one run across my front room into the dining room last night. As usual DH dawdled in getting up to see where it went and by then it had disappeared. I am better than I used to be in that there was a time when I couldn't have rested with it in the house. I just went up to bed. I'm now sitting in the living room knowing it could come out and I'm ok but I have shoes on...

I do find them tough to have around.

I've hear bonkers help and I've got some peppermint spray that is supposed to help but not sure what to do with that when they're already in the house...

delilahbucket · 22/09/2020 21:28

Not sure what they've been eating (each other probably) but they are bigger than ever this year. One has been evicted each day for the last three days here. Saw one in the rug earlier, but only just as it's a dark rug and it was almost camouflaged. I was stretching after a run and it just caught my eye.

mommydragon · 22/09/2020 21:34

We have had to remove 4 every other day... two have been massive and not sure how they get in... I've closed all the vents in the windows.

BunnyLovesBananas · 22/09/2020 21:36

We have work to do in our house so there are holes in the walls and they need filling up now Confused

Rumtopf · 22/09/2020 21:38

Our little dog isn't keen and seems to stomp on them, I've found 2 in the last few days. Time to go and collect some conkers.

tootyfruitypickle · 22/09/2020 21:54

I am so proud. I can finally live with house spiders if those are those skinny ones. I’ve had two in my study all week on the ceiling. Although today just the one (do they eat eachother?)

Feel I am finally an adult

Can’t be doing with the big hairy ones of course but that’s just common sense

BanditsBum · 22/09/2020 22:00

We have had at least one a day all this week.

The worst was the one that crawled out from under my pillow when I was reading in bed the other night.

The pup will eat them if he sees them but he is asleep when they appear. Thankfully the kids haven't came across any yet.

Pinecone88 · 22/09/2020 22:04

There is no need to kill or vacuum spiders, that's just cruel.
Peppermint spray helps, just spray all the doors and windows, anywhere they could get in from outside or move from room to room. If you see any, just release them outside.

RaspberrySkies · 22/09/2020 22:14

Lol @ Pinecone88. Bless you 😂😱

Elieza · 22/09/2020 22:23

I let them stay until they become so large they need to pay their share of rent, at which point if no cash is forthcoming I put them out using the trusted glass and postcard method.

As you can imagine, quite a few have been evicted.

When I see a smaller one I just put my feet up on the couch and the cat and I death stare at it until it goes under a unit to kill creepy crawlies. Grin

RaspberrySkies · 22/09/2020 22:26

I made DH get out the bath to deal with one this evening 😬😱

Rhine · 22/09/2020 22:32

If you can tolerate the spindly ones that live in corners with the tiny bodies very thin long legs, they actually eat the chunkier horrible Big ones.

Itsmybirthday19 · 22/09/2020 22:34

Yes, one is currently "at large" in my bedroom after surprising me by being inside the SHIRT I WAS PUTTING ON.

How we laughed.

justasking111 · 22/09/2020 22:34

Two daddy long legs tonight they also give me the heebie jeebies.

Sweet Jesus, I’d need some calming drug after that, preferably one that actually knocked me out and obliterated my memory, 😱🕷 @Itsmybirthday19

giggly · 22/09/2020 23:34

When I went to bed the other night there was a huge fat hairy one in the middle of my duvet , I swear it was winking at meShock like come on doll you’ve pulledGrin
Swiftly evicted out of the window

BlackeyedSusan · 22/09/2020 23:36

None here. Just as well, I sleep on the floor. Or should that be used to sleep, now I lay awake staring in case something moves.

BlackeyedSusan · 22/09/2020 23:37

Can you sleep standing up?

PussGirl · 22/09/2020 23:38

My ex husband, current partner & adult son all get the YUK with spiders, so I sort them out.

I don't particularly like them myself, but grab them and hoy them out the nearest window. No killing. If they're bigger than about an inch and a half across I prefer to wear rubber glovers - avoids the nasty tickling Smile

PussGirl · 22/09/2020 23:38

Glovers not glovers - sigh!

PussGirl · 22/09/2020 23:39

Gloves!!! FFS Grin

OMG that is one of my worst fears :(
Awwlookatmybabyspider · 22/09/2020 23:46

“I hear bonkers help”

Better get bonking then. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

DanceWithYourBalloon · 23/09/2020 00:58

Apparently on 5% of those big hairy spiders you see have ever been outside. They actually have been living in your house cracks/lofts/floorboards for generations. Most spider when placed outside don't live as they aren't used to the conditions.
I hate them and get traumatised every autumn.
Those skinny wispy ones actually catch and eat the big black hairy ones, so I let them stay.
