Colposcopy and possible punch biopsy tomprrow

Posting for traffic.

I've got a colposcopy and possibly a punch biopsy tomorrow. I'm a little nervous as to how painful it's going to be. I'm mostly fine when I have my smear, albeit obviously uncomfortable. How long does it take? Is the biopsy very painful? Just a bit nervous! Any experiences? Tia

I had one ages ago....they use a local anesthetic so to me it was just like a smear that lasted a bit longer.....if you Google punch biopsy cervix there is a document from Chester hospital which explains the process quite well and put you at ease. Hope all goes well.

You’ll get a local anestetic which is for me the worst part as for a few minutes your heart will be racing and you’ll shake.
Then after that you feel no pain at all.
It will take about 30 mins I think.

I’ve had one recently and have to have another unfortunately.

I had this last year. You're in a very upright position in a special chair. It lasted about 20 -30 mins. Wasn't the best time of my life but low pain and only light spotting after. Good luck... It's unpleasant but you'll be OK 💐💐

Urgh. I have one this week, and had a covid test today as pre-procedure. And some awful drinks to flush my system out. My first one too, and I hope the local will just knock me out, as I really dont want to feel anything on this. Hoping it will all be clear. Hope it goes well for you.

I've had two of them. Neither was a big deal. Bit of a pinch, but not all that painful. Tiny bit of spotting after.

Thank you everyone that's reassuring. I'm a little worried about the local anaesthetic. Only because I can be prone to panic attacks if I feel my heart racing. Hard to explain. How did you feel afterwards? A friend of mine said she felt quite wiped out/tired for the rest of the day. Will I be OK to drive home after? About 10 min drive

I've been told by my Specialist I wont be able to drive and should have someone with me for the rest of the day. I wouldnt think you should try and drive.

It's a number of years ago I had a punch biopsy but like a PP said I remember feeling a slight pinch. It didn't hurt but I did have period pain feeling afterwards and some very light bleeding. I sat upstairs on a rattly bus to travel to work which I don't think helped!
I think it would be best to get someone to drive you home.

@MishyJDI, are you perhaps having a colonoscopy? Just wondered when you mentioned the drinks and not being able to drive after.

When I had a punch biopsy at the colposcopy clinic it was sore getting the local but that was over really quick. I was similar to a PP and in for almost 30 mins all in. Was spotting and crampy afterwards. I drove myself home but would recommend a hot drink and biscuit and a sit down afterwards as I felt quite shaky. It's a nerve wracking think to have to have done so if you can get someone else to take you it wouldn't be a bad idea.

I had one over 20 years ago and was not given a local anaesthetic, I agree about the 'pinch' sensation. I was there alone so must have driven myself home. Good luck.

I’ve had a few, and they were fine. A slight pinch and some light spotting afterwards. I drove myself there and back and was back at work after a cuppa and some chocolate.

Oh you are so right, I read the first bit wrong. Clearly I aint a medical person.

I had one in August. I thought, given that I've had 3 natural births, it wouldn't be that bad. Which to be fair it wasn't. The anesthetic did make my heart race which was weird.
I would say don't plan on doing anything for the rest of the day. I felt quite emotional.
For me the worst bit was I bled for 4 weeks afterwards. They said it was normal but it was so annoying!

Thanks everyone. Had it this morning. It was quite painful but that was just the speculum. I didn't have a natural birth with Dd so it can be quite tight down there. They did a punch biopsy. Didn't have anaesthetic. Didn't feel that bit. Was quite teary during. Had some period pain after and had a nap. Feel fine now.

I had one a few years ago. No anaesthetic. They just got me to cough as they took the sample. Didn't feel a thing at all. They used a silver stick thingy to help stem the bleeding. Had some light spotting afterwards.

I've just had this done a few weeks ago, you won't have anaesthetic for a punch biopsy, that's only if they do lletz/loop biopsy. I was absolutely petrified and so anxious. They made me cough twice for the biopsy whilst they snipped off the cells, was uncomfortable and a little painful but very bearable (I have a low pain threshold). I bled for about 5 days and then was fine. They might do the lletz for you there and then if needed but they didn't with me due to my age (26) as the consultant said he didn't want to overtreat me and the fact my fertility is very important to me although I know that's a rare complication.

I've just got a letter to say the biopsy showed cin2 and they were having a 'colposcopy correlation' meeting to determine the best management plan. Honestly the worst part is the waiting. Huge good luck it will be over before you know it and it really highlights just how important these things are.

Sorry op, just read you update. So glad to hear it went well for you. I think people may be getting the anaesthetic confused with the lletz procedure which is different to the punch biopsy. I think it's normal to feel quite teary after, I certainly felt very vulnerable afterwards.

Glad it went okay and others are right, the worst part is waiting for the results. It was a horrible time for me as I went on to have a cone biopsy and again had to wait 2 weeks for the results. I hope you get good news.

I had a colposcopy last year with punch biopsies, I felt a tiny pinch but that was it. Felt fine afterwards, tbh I was just so relieved that everything looked normal.

Had Lletz treatment about 11 years ago and the most uncomfortable part was the local anaesthetic.
The staff are lovely and will do their utmost to put you at ease.
