Anyone had a Gas meter under the stairs moved?

I want to put a loo in under the stairs but there’s a bloody great gas meter in there.
Could it be moved into a cupboard on the outside of the house?
Is it a huge job?
Is it expensive?

It can only be touched by your energy supplier. If you get in touch with them, they'll be able to discuss costs with you, some suppliers have some info on their websites!

It looks like the actual meter belongs to the national grid and not the supply company.

After all I could change supplier tomorrow.

We looked into getting our electricity meter moved (only a short distance), that would have been the energy supplier - actually they can move the electricity meter a bit further than the gas meter. After that, yes, it's the national grid.
It wasn't worth it for us to move it (for aesthetics), we would still have to cover it up somehow.

Fingers crossed it's not too expensive or too much of a hassle. And yes crazy how you can have the work done and then switch supplier, I wonder if there's a minimum term you need to be with them after they've done the work.
Hopefully in your case, the benefit of adding the toilet in will be worth it, as well as increased saleability and maybe even value when/if you move house.

We are considering building work at the moment and it's so disheartening when your plans are more difficult or expensive than you thought they would be!

I looked at it about 10 years ago and the charge was £1000 to move it less than 1 foot.

I wondered if it had changed, got easier or cheaper.

You need a box for the meter, which will be sunk into your house wall or attached to it. We had to have ours moved due to having an extension built. I think it cost something like £450. Was a bit of a pain as they kept cancelling appointments for spurious reasons.

You need to find out who owns and manages the gas supply in your area and get in touch with them - ours is Northern Gas Networks, which covers (I think) Yorkshire and NE England.

One reason ours might have been a lot less than the £1000 you've been quoted is that our builders installed the box while they were building the extension so all NGN had to do was move the meter.

I expect that if the gas people have to dig a hole in a brick wall to fit the box, that will add to the cost. Also could vary by supply company, they'll all have their own pricing structure.

Afaik there’s a real push to get gas meters from inside homes to outside so you may not have to pay for it.

From the NGN and Cadent gas websites, it appears that it costs somewhere between £310 and £2k+ depending on where you are in the country, how far the meter is being moved and whether or not you're prepared to dig your own hole.

We had ours moved when we had a new boiler, we can’t have a smart meter now as the electric is one side of the house and gas the other, they can’t talk to each other

We had ours moved for nothing and I arranged some at work that cost nothing, although I seem to remember one had a cost for replaying the main moving the actually meter wasn’t charged for. Give Cadent a ring and ask them.

We had the gas meter moved about 15 years ago to an open porch. They were able to surface mount the box. I think it cost us about £250. We weren't able to get our electricity meter moved - something to do with the fact that we have our electricity supply to our house overhead rather than underground.

The only thing I can't do is give you a quote.

Your local gas distributor will need to love your inlet pipe for the meter from inside to outside. You can buy your own meter box far more cheaply than they would provide it. (Google it there's loads of websites to choose from. If you give me the first 3 digits of your meter number I can confirm what size you need)

Then once the inlet and the box are fitted outdoors the meter can be moved. You will also need a gas safe engineer to reconnect your meter inside your property and add any additional pipework from the meter in and recommission your new appliances.

We had to have ours moved, they did the whole street, so no idea about the cost.
It took a couple of days to sort out and involved digging a channel along the drive. They replaced everything and repaired all the damage. It's now in our garage.

The OP probably needs to check who her local gas network company is first. She hasn't actually said whether she lives in the area served by Cadent.

I had mine done about 5 years, although this was moving it from the side of the house to the front.

It cost £1100, but they arsed around so much with cancelled appointments and no shows that they refunded me half.

Your supplier will move it free of charge if it's less than a 1 meter move on the same wall otherwise it will need to be your DNO and they will charge ,you will need to arrange to get your DNO and supplier out on the same day as only your supplier can uncap the gas to get you back on supply after the move.
