If you’ve moved out of London, how much did it cost?

As a freelancer who has managed to cling onto work (only just) and with a husband who took voluntary redundancy at the end of last year, back when Corona was nothing more than a beer that you stuck a bit of lime in, I’m now entering the ‘panic’ stage of the pandemic.

I’m considering selling our house in London and moving to Scotland (where my family is) mainly because we might be able to buy a family home outright, which might make it a little easier for us to ride out the coming recession.

So I’m busy looking at rightmove and doing my sums, but would like to know how much moving across country is likely to cost us.

I’d love to hear the experiences of anyone who’s done this!

Do you mean the costs of the actual move, so just how much a packing service and removals would be?

Or about legal fees when buying in Scotland?

We moved out of London 3 years ago but I'm not sure there's any particular cost associated with moving out of London other than the usual ones. In terms of distance tou should be able to get quotes from removers fairly easily. I don't think distance makes much difference, no where near as much as the size of property you are packing up does.

Ah, that’s good to know re moving costs not being hugely affected by the distance involved.

Roughly how much was your removal costs?

Moved from Central London to Surrey, cost of using removal service was around £800. It definitely costs more the further you move but extras like having the removal men pack up your belongings (recommend this if you can afford it) add up too.

Moved in April from London to the south coast.

With packing, loading, two weeks storage then redelivering it cost me around £4500 - but obviously a good chunk of that was the packing and storage costs so you may not need that.

Of course distance affects cost.

Removal vans are not speedy , there are restrictions on commercial driving hours. So a London to Scotland and back may take more than two days, need three staff, one or two nights accommodation, all their meals, and a lot of fuel.

If you're lucky, or flexible enough, the removers may be able to match your removal with another from Scotland to London. Other wise the return journey is also at your expense.

From SE London to East Kent about £2,200 but that included 6 weeks of storage as we had a big gap completing the selling and buying.
