Things in movies that don’t make sense...

I was watching Ghost last night, Sam can’t touch/pick up anything but he can sit on a chair?? Took up far too much of my time today thinking about that!

I haven’t watched Clueless for a while, but from memory the (lack of) ick factor of Cher and her step brother is explained near the beginning of the film. Cher’s Dad married the Mum when Paul Rudd’s character was in his late teens, so Cher and him didn’t really live together. as he went off to university.

In most American films when someone has to take some painkillers, they always swig them straight out of the little orange bottle, with no water. Who takes tablets like that?! No one!

Re The Holiday, I live somewhere quite rural which has a train line direct to London in a neighbouring town. And surprisingly lots of people do commute which is a drive to the station then a train. It totals around 2.5 hours though.

ReeseWitherfork · 21/09/2020 19:51

I think the ick factor re Cher & Josh is that he refers to her dad as “dad” (“I went by dads office today”) and himself as a “brother-type”. And he is living in the house throughout the movie it seems?! Not sure on that one!

I can never understand the end of Titanic when she throws the necklace in the water. It really annoys me and now I actually have to turn it off

MrsWhites · 21/09/2020 20:09

I’ve thought of another one...why in horror films do they always run up the stairs?

Totally agree with the morning breath and needing a wee thing, totally unrealistic, I couldn’t even consider morning sex without having a wee first (not that the opportunity has presented itself since having kids!)

Home alone - I always wonder why neither parent worries about Kevin’s mental state - I mean he clearly has violent tendencies!

Unrealistic action movies with blatant CGI, I know it’s for entertainment but at least make it realistic. If fast and furious was real no one would survive the driving/racing off a cliff/ shooting at each other.

A quiet place movie, how did she get the opportunity to fall pregnant? Surely they made a bit of noise Blush

I always thought she was throwing it in as a gift to Jack...I could be totally wrong

If you've got kids you learn really quickly to be quiet Grin

BusySittingDown · 21/09/2020 21:18

@Mamette, fair point.

I've noticed that they do it a lot in Made In Chelsea - although it's not a film and is supposed to be "reality TV". They could have a tab I guess but usually they walk into the bar, order their drink, meet someone that they inevitably have a row with and walk out of the bar, while I stare at the screen thinking "what? They never paid for that Champagne!!!" No wonder they can afford to drink in swanky places - they don't pay! Grin

I'm well aware that I need to stop watching such shite.

Ishihtzuknot · 21/09/2020 21:22

But in a silent world even body movement will make enough noise for those monsters to hear 😂 I’ve been a single mum for years so maybe I’ve just forgotten Blush

BabloHoney · 21/09/2020 21:23

In the Sixth Sense, did he not realise he was dead? Literally no one speaks to him the whole film apart from the annoying kid. Not even his wife. My husband and kids are pretty good at ignoring me when I nag them to do stuff, but if it had gone on for days I might wonder if something was a tad off.

doadeer · 21/09/2020 21:24

That people get on their beds in their shoes!! Surely people don't do this???

merryhouse · 21/09/2020 21:24

@newtb

A James Bond film (can't remember which one) where there was a warning about -300°.

Absolute zero is -273°.

Really pissed me off.

Is there any possibility that they were talking about Fahrenheit?
HippyChickMama · 21/09/2020 21:25

Not necessarily in films but in TV programmes when someone walks into a pub and asks for 'a pint'. Of what?!

iklboo · 21/09/2020 21:27

@doadeer - that gets me too! I apologise to health staff for getting on the examination bed with my shoes on. Blush

yeOldeTrout · 21/09/2020 21:28

Thriller / Action movies (or books) where people never eat or sleep.

Haha same! Imagine snuggling up on your sofa in your trainers!?!

theproudgeek · 21/09/2020 21:32

@SassenachWitch

Cinderella - why didn't the glass slipper disappear at midnight?
In the film 'The Slipper and the Rose' (which is the best version of Cinderella) the slippers are created but the drss etc is transformed. So, although they never explicitly say this is what happens, it makes sense that the slippers persist when everything else transforms back.
pollysproggle · 21/09/2020 21:34

Any movie/tv show with a baby in it always has the baby in a hat. Indoors, outdoors, asleep in their cot- hat.

I suppose it's to disguise the dolls they use in some scenes but it really annoys me!

BusySittingDown · 21/09/2020 21:35

He thought his marriage was on the rocks and that his wife was sad because he'd been working too much. Near the beginning she's sat at a table in a restaurant and he joins her and looks as if he's late. She says "happy anniversary" and storms off.

We later realise that she's grieving.

And I hope that everyone on this thread has seen the film as this is a massive spoiler! Grin

newtb · 21/09/2020 21:36

The guy does go to the toilet in the film Snakes on a plane.

Nandocushion · 21/09/2020 21:36

I just watched Tenet last night and while it wasn't bad, I didn't have a clue what was going on at any point in the film. Every so often DH and I would look at each other and shrug our shoulders. Also, in every single time travel film - including Tenet! - there's a scene where someone says "but what if we [do X thing in the past that will change the future]?" and someone else says "it's time travel! Don't even try to make sense of it", so you know the writer and director can't be bothered to make it make sense of it for you either.

Myohmy123 · 21/09/2020 21:44

Quite often in films and tv shows the characters wake up or get out of bed in a rush and put their work clothes on and run out the door to work. No wee, no wash, no clean pants, no hair brushing, no deodorant. Then in the next scene they arrive at their place of work.

Plesky · 21/09/2020 21:54

In Four Weddings and a Funeral, it’s always baffled me that Andie McDowell’s Carrie invites Hugh Grant’s entire friendship group to her wedding, despite the fact that he’s just someone she’s slept with twice, and she’s only met his friends at two weddings. And they all trek dutifully from the Home Counties and London to the Scottish Highlands despite all being rather bored with wedding-going, and hardly knowing her from a hole in the ground!

Also, I’ve never seen why clever, glamorous, sharp Fiona would have spent years carrying a torch for hapless, shambolic, walking disaster Charles. It’s a way weirder idea than Charles almost marrying Duckface.

LozEliza · 21/09/2020 22:26

Drinks are always ordered never touched or not even a quarter finished and the person walks out and leaves it.

No one ever says bye on the phone they just hang up!
