What's corn syrup?

I've been scrolling Pinterest for ideas for halloween tea & came across "poison apples". They're pretty much toffee apples but with black food colouring. The toffee recipe says I'd need corn syrup but I couldn't see it on Tesco (usually order online).

So, what is corn syrup? & could I substitute something else?

thank you, I'll maybe have a go sooner rather than later & sub golden syrup to see how they turn out.

You can buy light corn syrup online. I just saw some on amazon

Or just make toffee apples with black food colouring?
