Girls names... HELP!

Winelovingmama · 20/09/2020 21:50

I’m 38 weeks pregnant today and we can’t decide on a name... I just want to make a decision. We’ve narrowed it down to Sophia or Zadie. Two very different names. One fairly popular and one more unique. Will people constantly get it wrong and think we’re saying Sadie if we call her Zadie? Would love your thoughts please x

Possibly not helpful but Sadie is lovely! - nicer than Zadie I think?

RainbowRaine · 20/09/2020 21:52

I love the name Sophia

SleepingStandingUp · 20/09/2020 21:53

I prefer Zadie but agree Sadie is cute

Or Safia

MrsJonesAndMe · 20/09/2020 21:54

Sadie is lovely

RainbowRaine · 20/09/2020 21:56

How about Zafia

cheapskatemum · 20/09/2020 21:57

I like both

35andThriving · 20/09/2020 22:06

Sophia would probably be the most straightforward of the two to live with. Zadie could be misheard a lot as Sadie. I have a name that is often misheard as another though and it doesn't bother me.

I like Sophia and Zadie.

I don't like the name Sadie. It's just my personal opinion but it seems like a negative name to me as it has the words sad and die in it.

Davros · 20/09/2020 22:17

Sophia is boring. Sadie is a nickname for Sarah. Not sure about Zadie, maybe it's short for Zarah?! The writer Zadie Smith would always be referenced but she's a good role model I think

EhUp · 20/09/2020 22:22

I would choose Zadie

Much more interesting than Sophia and nicer than Sadie

You might get the odd person who gets mixed up and calls her Sadie but to my ear they sound quite different so I doubt it will be a huge problem (and very obvious when you see it written down that it is not Sadie)

PinkLegoBrick · 20/09/2020 22:28

Is it Zad-ee or Zay-Dee?

Pinkpepper9 · 20/09/2020 22:33

Safia is pretty

Winelovingmama · 20/09/2020 22:41

It’s pronounced zay-dee as in same as Sadie but with a Z not an S.

Very helpful thank you. I agree I think Sophia would be the ‘safe’ slightly boring option but there’s something about Zadie that I really love 💕 It’s actually an old English name from the 1800s, I found it whilst looking at ‘Vintage baby girl names’ not short for anything. Zadie Smith is an amazing author so I agree @Davros not a bad role model!

Davros · 20/09/2020 22:47

Zadie it is! Lovely

DramaAlpaca · 20/09/2020 23:56

I love both, but would choose Zadie. It's less common than Sophia and it's so much nicer than Sadie. It's surprising what a difference one letter makes.

TapingTheTop40 · 21/09/2020 08:30

Love Sophia- Love Sadie- but Zadie doesn’t sound like it should be a girls name. It sounds like a descriptive word like “ooh I feel zadie today”.

Wetweekend99 · 21/09/2020 08:31

Love Zadie.

Wetweekend99 · 21/09/2020 08:31

Its also the name of a brilliant author

TweetUsOnFacebook · 21/09/2020 08:45

I love Zadie but be prepared for your dd not to look like a 'Zadie'. We wanted to call our dd Briony, but when she was born she just didn't look like a Briony. It took us a couple of weeks of living with her before we came up with the name that suited her.

SocraticJunkieWannabe · 21/09/2020 09:00

I prefer Sophia to Zadie.

icedaisy · 21/09/2020 09:00

Agree with @TweetUsOnFacebook

Dd was Jemima, until I saw her. With hindsight it is very difficult to name someone you have not seen.

A week later we found her name.

Prefer zadie though.

aToadOnTheWhole · 21/09/2020 10:35

Zadie. Sophia is lovely but Zadie is interesting and a bit different.

FizzyGreenWater · 21/09/2020 10:50

Also -I've noticed that while Sophias seem to be ten a penny and it sounds boring and fussy - Sophie seems MUCH less frequently used and has a simpler, more classic vibe.

Zadie
Sadie
Sophie

all lovely

Sophia - boring

MsEllany · 21/09/2020 10:52

Sadie is a nickname for Sarah

So? It’s still a name in its own right.

I like both OP. They’re both inoffensive and pretty sounding.

LuckyAmy1986 · 21/09/2020 12:25

Zadie over Sophia, I like unusual names
