Flummoxed over isolation rules

I should have a better understanding of this, so I'm a little embarrassed to be asking but I want to do the right thing.

DH works as a nurse in nhs, his ward has been sealed due to having 3 patients and 6 nurses test covid positive in the last 10 days (mentalhealth ward)
He obviously treats the positive patients, and has worked closely with everyone. He was unwell last week, but not with covid symptoms so they refused to test him.
We live together and have a ds.
He is still required to go to work as usual, no isolation etc.

It just doesnt sit right with me at all, but I cant put myself off work or take ds out of school.

It smacks of shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted to me but I'm fully expected to go in to work tomorrow, as is he.
