They’ve only been back in school for ten blooming days and we’ve got fucking nits 😡

We’ve been completely clear over all of lockdown and...they’re heerrrre!!

I wouldn’t mind but they’re Year 9 and 10. I thought we would be done with it, but
noooo!! Looks like we’re back to the weekly checks again.

I had this mad, hair-brained idea that they could use lockdown to get eradicate bits. They could make every child have nit treatment before they returned to school. I know it's a totally bonkers idea, but you've got to have your dreams Grin.

Choccylips · 20/09/2020 18:09

I didn't realise that nits could jump 2 metres, but now I do.

phoenix65 · 20/09/2020 18:20

Op, I feel your pain. We had nits about 5 years ago, as soon as we got rid of them, the fuckers came back. Never mind zombies, why don't film directors do movies about bloody nits?

Maryann1975 · 20/09/2020 18:32

I can’t imagine telling dd14 to check her own hair for nits. It’s a crap job to do, but something that you can’t be expected to do properly by yourself surely? I get that she is sensible enough to check, so I’d get her to return the favour And check my hair for me because to do a proper job surely you need to be able to see what you are doing?

mumsthewurd · 20/09/2020 18:34

@omg35

Completely understandable that the nits are annoying but surely by age 13-14 they're old enough to do their own weekly checks and treatments?
i have never been able to effectively check my own head for nits. My eyesight doesn't extend to the back of my own head. Confused
Batshitbeautycosmeticsltd · 20/09/2020 18:35

@megletthesecond

Anyone expecting a 13yr old to check and treat their own nits needs to give their head a wobble.

OP - hope it's sorted soon.

I did checks, but my DD nit combed her own hair at 14, and it is loooonng. Once I showed her how to do it, she preferred doing it herself. She's always been thorough. Has you seen how skillfully some teens can apply makeup? Girls that age often shave their legs and underarms on their own.

The lice treatments don't kill off the nits, so you have to comb and comb.

Fishfingersandwichplease · 20/09/2020 18:54

I always invest in a bottle of Protect and Go - tends to last a whole school year and so far, we have never had them in this house- well worth the investment!!

Newjez · 20/09/2020 19:07

Covid cut?

CoraPirbright · 20/09/2020 19:21

Oh dear I feel your pain. A grand total of 8 days and ds and I have....worms!! Lovely. Clearly anti-Covid handwashing is not really happening all that much!! We usually get them probably once or twice a term. Grim Envy

MitziK · 20/09/2020 19:34

That means there's a family where they have probably had them since mid March without treatment.

Easy way to check yourself is to drip 5 drops of lavender oil onto your parting and give it 3 minutes. The fuckers are up gasping for air by then and you can comb them into an empty bathtub.

3 drops works on children, especially those with thick, dark or curly hair.

Once you find them, you start the conditioner combing every other day and they're usually gone in a week.

Maisiecow · 20/09/2020 19:42

I never had nits as a child growing up in the seventies. (No doubt thanks Mostly to the nit nurse!) when my children were small though, my god, it was constant infestations. Every hair wash meant ages with the nit comb for both me and DD. I could write a bloody thesis on the life cycle of a human head louse! It was the same poor children whose parents couldn’t give a fuck constantly reinfecting the others. And yes, you absolutely CAN see a severe infestation crawling around someone’s head. Let’s face it, if the parents are happy to go around with their heads literally crawling, what chance have the kids got?

Fuckityfucksake · 20/09/2020 19:49

Are you my sister OP
She text me earlier in the week saying almost identical to your title :)
I've saved a fortune during lockdown not having to knock up essential oil deterrent for my nit breeder niece. I'm sure she thinks of them as pets and likes bloody having them.

Two days for DS at pre school!

randomer · 20/09/2020 19:55

How can an adult turn up at a school with their head crawling? Sorry, don't understand this.

thelegohooverer · 20/09/2020 20:07

I was naive enough to think they’d be eradicated in lockdown.

I’m shocked that anyone would think kids can sort it out themselves. No wonder they keep coming back Hmm

Suchalicklepumpkin · 20/09/2020 20:11

Mine went back to school on a Wednesday, the email arrived on the Monday evening to say it was in a class. My daughters have thick bum length hair. Thankfully they were/are clear, but I think I made up new curses when the email arrived.

user1495884620 · 20/09/2020 20:34

When my dd caught nits, I also caught them. Eradicated them on myself (and her) by nit combing myself every few days over about three weeks, no special eyes in the back of my head required. I'm sure many single parents catch nits off their kids and manage fine so I'm not sure why a fourteen year old with no special needs would not be able to do the same if shown how to.

DuckonaBike · 20/09/2020 20:40

I also thought they would be eradicated in lockdown! It was one of the few positives. It was great going months with no nits and no colds! Two weeks back at school and we’ve all had a cold so it will probably be nits next ...

emptyshelvesagain · 20/09/2020 20:42

Ah, you are part of the race to the bottom of helpfulness. You are a firm contender too Hmm

@randomer

Usually it's connected to mental health problems or learning difficulties.

MaeveDidIt · 20/09/2020 21:20

I know how you feel OP they're an utter nightmare.

It's always the same few ignorant dirty families who don't give a shit/are too lazy and let their poor kids suffer with them continuously, and they don't give a shit about their kids passing them on and on.

How they can live with them and not do anything about it is beyond me in this day and age.

Ilovemypantry · 20/09/2020 21:30

I thought the kids were supposed to be social distancing in school, how have they got close enough to others to catch nits, that’s what I would be concerned about. Perhaps have a word with the teacher about it.

emptyshelvesagain · 20/09/2020 21:41

You cant control what they are doing out of school. The teacher is not responsible here. They are teenagers.

ineedaholidaynow · 20/09/2020 22:19

Children are not social distancing between each other at school, only distancing between bubbles. There isn't space in classrooms to be 2m apart, however, they shouldn't really be so close they are touching heads
