They’ve only been back in school for ten blooming days and we’ve got fucking nits 😡

We’ve been completely clear over all of lockdown and...they’re heerrrre!!

I wouldn’t mind but they’re Year 9 and 10. I thought we would be done with it, but
noooo!! Looks like we’re back to the weekly checks again.

Jesus Christ, you don't help your 9 year old when she has nits? That's some bargain basement level parenting.

ineedaholidaynow · 20/09/2020 15:12

We always looked like a family of chimps whenever nits came into our house with everyone checking someone else’s head!

redlockscelt · 20/09/2020 15:21

At least it's only nits!

Proves that there’s no social distancing .......

We had our first case at school on the second day of term!

FortunesFave · 20/09/2020 15:27

Include of course I helped her Grin I helped her in that I'd double check but she did the hard yards because she liked it. She wanted to do it...because she's an independent type.

Couchbettato · 20/09/2020 15:29

I'm itching just reading this

Have you heard about worms?

lillylemons · 20/09/2020 15:31

dd 13 has them too I found her in the bathroom this morning trying to treat them herself. The amount of hair shes pulled out using the nit comb could make someone a wig. I'd much prefer to treat them for her myself that her pulling out her hair doing it.

I have a very independent daughter too which is a blessing and a curse Grin

I can't imagine her dealing with nits herself, but whatever works I guess!

Scweltish · 20/09/2020 15:34

@omg35

Completely understandable that the nits are annoying but surely by age 13-14 they're old enough to do their own weekly checks and treatments?
Of course they’re not. They can’t check their own scalp and successfully remove all the eggs unless they’ve got eyes in their back up of their heads. Some parents are actually nice enough to help their children you know..
ErinBrockovich · 20/09/2020 15:36

Makes me feel really sad for those children that haven’t been treated at home.

It’s one thing for them to get passed from child to child in nursery or similar but in older children who would be able to articulate their discomfort... makes you wonder who is looking after them at home.

When my eldest got them at nursery it was so obvious. Not to treat them is neglectful parenting imo - even when the children are age 9 and over.

ErinBrockovich · 20/09/2020 15:37

*year 9.

oakleaffy · 20/09/2020 15:40

I read that by the time itching starts, they have been on your head for about a month!
Agree with frustration, some families must be in a state of denial not to notice.
I checked DS’s friends hair and sure enough they had them despite their mum saying she looks.

You need good eyesight and to know what to look for.
Schools should sheep dip everyone, as always some untreated person keeping infestation going

pastandpresent · 20/09/2020 15:40

Every time I read these, I always wonder. Are these common here in UK?
My dc is in secondary, never had them. Never heard anyone else in school had them either. I don't even know what it looks like, never seen one.

SnuggyBuggy · 20/09/2020 15:41

I'm surprised it's not more common at Secondary with schools being bigger

Quirrelsotherface · 20/09/2020 15:42

@57holdmysocks

Yes, yes it would. At the end we could have a little workshop, all about perspective. Great idea!

oakleaffy · 20/09/2020 15:43

Stupid selfies!
Louse Spreader shots they should be called.

DS got himself a “louse freezer” hair cut, shaved at the sides and back, and about an inch long on top.
Zero lice rocking that cut😂

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 20/09/2020 15:46

I've seen all the usual ones itching away since return to school , makes me feel really sad for those poor kids.

I'm just running the nitty gritty comb through my kids hair every couple of days and do a good 10 minute check once a week.

Haven't had an outbreak for years since starting this routine thankfully.

RandomMess · 20/09/2020 15:48

Urgh your poor DC and you SadSadSad

If people aren't allergic to their saliva they don't itch.

I am SO allergy to them one of my DC wasn't though. The years I spent with the nitty gritty comb killing and maiming the bastard hatchlings!!

I only ever had them as an adult from the DC, being back the nit nurse!

canigohomenow · 20/09/2020 15:56

What thirteen year old could completely rid themselves of nits?!

An adult would struggle, let alone child.

Would you really expect your children to sort this yourself?

VintageStitchers · 20/09/2020 15:56

This pisses me off too.

We had the usual message from school about Nits, at the end the first week so whoever has them, presumably their parents haven't dealt with them at all during lockdown. Poor kids. Sad

Salome61 · 20/09/2020 15:57

So sorry to read this. I only caught them off the kids once at the back of my neck and it felt like it was on fire, I must have been scratching in the night. Does tea tree oil still work as a deterrrent?

ElGuardiandenoche · 20/09/2020 15:59

Thanks for the sympathy (and otherwise) folks 😀

My year 10 is autistic and hates anything touching his head. We were battling monthly before lockdown. It’s been the same since they started at this school. His hair is dark and very thick and has got quite long. I’ve only just managed to get him to agree to go to a barber. It’s taken a lot of work as his old one closed down. So we’ve had to visit different ones till he found one he’s comfortable with and spend time there just seeing how they work until he was comfortable and we had an appointment for tomorrow, I guess I’ll have to cancel it now which is going to set us back weeks and upset him. Sorry I know that’s a big drip feed but in was just venting I my original post.

I was washing my hands in the bathroom and glanced in the mirror and thought hang on is that a??? It was a crawler in my hair. I’ve only found two in mine so hopefully we’ve got them before they get too much. We’re using a mousse as recommended on a thread on here so it wasn’t too bad for him though the fight we have with the comb is not pleasant for either of us.

SamsMumsCateracts · 20/09/2020 15:59

Our school apparently had them go round the key worker children during lockdown, whilst social distancing was supposedly happening. Before this we had weekly letters as one family in particular with lots of siblings throughout the school years, wouldn't treat them. Occasionally one of the children would get treated, but the parents and other kids wouldn't. The letters started again this week and you can see them crawling through mums hair in the playground.

I wish the nit nurse was still a thing!

Of course they're not. I would need someone to check my hair thoroughly, I can't see the top of my head! Obviously you can comb and comb but the best way is for someone else to check for you.

Why are so many MNers so sanctimonious about how perfect they are? Nobody is, even you. Sorry.

cologne4711 · 20/09/2020 16:02

yeah right
