When to stop reaching for more (career)?

At what point do you reach the decision to continue doing the same job until you retire?
I think I have become somewhat hooked on getting the next promotion or next big role. Just wondering if other career-focused people ever came to want job stability at any point?

For context, I am a head teacher. I don't want to look at executive headship or a different career, so the best thing would be to stay in this or equivalent roles. But I can't help but feel I should still be striving for something more.

I hope this makes sense to someone. How can you keep the excitement going without reaching for another rung of the ladder?
