Baked beans. How often?

ODFOx · 20/09/2020 08:52

We go through 4 tins a week and yet they rarely feature in main evening meals. They just get used for quick lunches or brunches on the go, with toast or a jacket potato.
At our local food bank the emergency week of food for a family of 4 includes 4 tins of beans and I thought it wasn't enough if beans are to be a main protein source but some of the others thought 4 tins was loads and a family of 4 would be sick of beans.
How many tins a week does your household get through?

None , disgusting things.Grin

sirfredfredgeorge · 20/09/2020 08:57

Once a month at most, and then generally just eaten with a spoon 'cos someone in the family fancies them.

Lockdownseperation · 20/09/2020 08:57

Too many. Did you know baked beans are also a source of calcium?

Maybe one between 4 of us. DD loves them, DS hates them, DH and I have them once in a while.

ScarMatty · 20/09/2020 08:57

Around 3-4. We buy the sugar free/no added sugar ones and add them to lots of things

But then I don't like giving my children cereal/toast for breakfast so beans are a great and quick option

Cheeseycheeseycheesecheese · 20/09/2020 08:59

Since dh has been working from home, 4 or 5 of the microwave packs a week. Before then maybe a tin or 2.

cliffdiver · 20/09/2020 09:01

1-2 cans beans / spaghetti hoops per month (DD1 doesn't like beans).

We only have them on toast as an occasional lunch.

Strugglingtodomybest · 20/09/2020 09:02

We eat loads, I love them. Beans and egg on toast for breakfast or lunch, add them to shepherds pie etc, or have them with basic meals like sausage and mash.

Merename · 20/09/2020 09:02

It varies but would be unusual to use 4x a week for us. But, if I was in a really hard situation with little fresh veg then I imagine I’d definitely use 4.

Nonamesavail · 20/09/2020 09:02

6 a week

Regulus · 20/09/2020 09:06

Loads, I'm sure people think I'm panic buying when I load up but they are quick and filling and go with most things, I even add them to cottage pie to stretch the meat, kids have egg beans and toast most mornings as well.

Whatthebloodyell · 20/09/2020 09:06

We eat (or at least the kids do) beans most weeks, but most weeks only 1 and never more than 3. I think 4 tins is plenty.

Camomila · 20/09/2020 09:10

I buy the little ones - normal for DH and I, healthy version for the DC.
Probably 4 a week? We usually have jacket potatoes one evening, and I sometimes have beans on toast for lunch.

Coldcough · 20/09/2020 09:12

1 a week.

RainbowFlowers · 20/09/2020 09:13

Maybe 1 can a month, family of 4.

Ragwort · 20/09/2020 09:15

From a Food Bank point of view we are inundated with baked beans and most people/families rarely want more than one or two tins a week.

Yes, I know they are nutritious and cheap .... but there's something a bit depressing about dealing with mountains of baked beans as donations Sad.

ODFOx · 20/09/2020 09:19

We had loads of beans too Ragwort, but when we're putting 4 tins into every weekly bag they go down so fast!

Comefromaway · 20/09/2020 09:22

I eat them most days.

Atalune · 20/09/2020 09:23

What are the items you’d most like to see?

We give-
Tuna
Packet ready foods where you just add boiling water- like rice/pasta/couscous things with the flavours already in
Jars of sauces for rice or pasta
Cereal
Biscuits
Crisps
Chocolate
Tins of fruit
Spreads like marmite, Nutella

Atalune · 20/09/2020 09:24

op sorry for the detail!

We have 2/week the children have them for a quick supper with jackets and cheese and maybe on toast for a lunch at the weekend.

pinkbalconyrailing · 20/09/2020 09:26

twice a year as part of a fry up breakfast.

they make my insides explode and I can heat the house with the fumes, so the occasions are carefully chosen.

Whathappenedtothelego · 20/09/2020 09:28

Normally, less than one a month.

But we had to self isolate for 14 days earlier in the year, and got through 3 or 4 tins in that time. They were an absolute godsend.

tywysoges · 20/09/2020 09:35

I buy the small tins as I am not terribly keen, they come in a pack of 3 and I buy them once a month-ish - I always have a spare pack, so might buy 2 packs a month if it’s been a baked bean-heavy month? I like other types of beans though so we’re not bean deprived Grin

Bbq1 · 20/09/2020 10:01

1 or 2 tins a week, always as part of a meal. I couldn't eat baked beans until I was 15 as I hated them up.to that point. I like a small amount, ds doesn't really like them and dh loves them.

KindergartenKop · 20/09/2020 11:44

4 probably. We are 2 adults and 2 primary school kids and we would probably eat them once or twice a week.
