Baked beans. How often?

We go through 4 tins a week and yet they rarely feature in main evening meals. They just get used for quick lunches or brunches on the go, with toast or a jacket potato.
At our local food bank the emergency week of food for a family of 4 includes 4 tins of beans and I thought it wasn't enough if beans are to be a main protein source but some of the others thought 4 tins was loads and a family of 4 would be sick of beans.
How many tins a week does your household get through?

Egg!

Longdistance · 21/09/2020 22:14

We get through 2 maybe 3 cans a week. Dds love them best. Dh and I have them with a breakfast or cheese and beans on a jacket potato.

I would eat 4 or 5 tins a week. Only since Covid, I've been having beans on toast for lunch as it's very filling and stops me snacking.

@EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire

Hardly ever.

I am not a fan of baked beans but I do like various different beans and legumes cooked in tomato based curries and tomato pasta sauces. I'll let you figure that one out.

Me too! Glad to meet a fellow weirdo.

Last can I had was in full lockdown and that was because I was stuck away and had a rummage in the cupboards to see what was there, so probably May.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 22/09/2020 08:56

Absolutely never. They are banned in my household.

Splodgetastic · 22/09/2020 10:52

I eat them too often! I have them for a weekend breakfast with an egg and we have them as a side vegetable. I have to persuade DH to have proper vegetables more often otherwise he would have them with everything! So we might end up going through four tins a week with just the two of us.

WhatWouldJKRDo · 22/09/2020 11:09

About 2 tins a week. One as part of a cooked breakfast on the weekend, one as a lunch with a poached egg and hot sauce.

About twice a year if we have a cooked breakfast. Nothing against them but I wouldn’t consider them a staple.
When I see what the food banks want, it reminds me of the food we ate in the 70s. It doesn’t seem like a very contemporary or adventurous selection.

No it isn't particularly adventurous. It is all things which are packaged for a long shelf life, which don't require refrigeration, which can be prepared using as little fuel as possible and which the widest range of people can eat.

We don’t eat many tins of baked beans - I like them but they hurt my tongue, which is weird - but we do go through around 2 tins of other beans (cannelini, haricot, pinto, black, adzuki, etc) cause I do love beans in meals!

Notcontent · 23/09/2020 11:31

I use lots of pulses in cooking - kidney beans, chickpeas, etc - but not keen on tinned baked beans - they are pretty processed and sugary.

SlopesOff · 23/09/2020 13:02

@ODFOx

Katherine that is so sad! One of the French National dishes is baked beans with ham in but they call it cassoulet!
Sausage casserole = cassoulet, chicken casserole = cassoulet, pork casserole = cassoulet...

Easy to make.

GlottalStrop · 23/09/2020 13:10

Lots. Sorry haven't RTFT but aren't they considered one of your five a day? I think the HV told me that :)

doodleygirl · 23/09/2020 18:22

I love beans, they are my go to comfort food. Unfortunately they don’t like me which means I only have them when I am in desperate need of comfort. I envy the regular bean eaters grin]

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 23/09/2020 18:49

1 or 2 tins at the most in a month. Haven’t had beans since July.
We only really have them as a potato topping......

MulticolourMophead · 23/09/2020 18:52

The only person in our house who eats baked beans is DD. DS and I hate them. Even then, DD will only have them maybe once or twice a year.

NerrSnerr · 23/09/2020 19:37

We have beans on toast once or twice a week. My daughter won't eat them but my son and I will.

AdoptedBumpkin · 23/09/2020 19:50

The most ever was probably half a tin. I don't like them that much but can eat them when there is nothing better. DD will eat them but is not excited by them, DP is indifferent afaik.
