Baked beans. How often?

ODFOx · 20/09/2020 08:52

We go through 4 tins a week and yet they rarely feature in main evening meals. They just get used for quick lunches or brunches on the go, with toast or a jacket potato.
At our local food bank the emergency week of food for a family of 4 includes 4 tins of beans and I thought it wasn't enough if beans are to be a main protein source but some of the others thought 4 tins was loads and a family of 4 would be sick of beans.
How many tins a week does your household get through?

Sometimes we have beans loads and sometimes not at all. It’s a few days before payday here and we’ve had some unexpected outgoings so lots of beans this week!

It would be at least two tins per meal for five of us. Jacket potatoes and beans on toast are easy staples.

thegcatsmother · 20/09/2020 12:11

I loathe them, dh and adult ds love them. A couple of cans a week on toast, on a jacket potato, with sausages and mash, or if I do a cooked breakfast.

Ragwort · 20/09/2020 12:48

Atuline your list sounds perfect Smile, obviously all Food Banks are different but your suggestions would suit the FB I volunteer at. The things we are drowning in are baked beans, soup & pasta & sanitary protection- when Period Poverty hit the headlines we were received a mountain of tampax Grin.

I love baked beans! I'm wfh and have them twice a week for lunch - on toast with grated cheese 😋. We sometimes have beans on toast for breakfast at weekends and I'll also occasionally put them in a sausage casserole or we have them on the side of cottage pie.
So about 2 tins a week on average. Heinz or Waitrose own brand.

FallonsTeaRoom · 20/09/2020 12:55

2 cans of beans a week (2 of us) usually on toast for a quick lunch. We’re on a high fibre diet (💨💨)Grin

Titsywoo · 20/09/2020 12:57

Rarely. Couple of tins a year. They're ok but not something I tend to think to add to meals. Might make the odd fry up and have some.

IHaveBrilloHair · 20/09/2020 12:59

Once or twice a month probably

EssentialHummus · 20/09/2020 13:03

I love the Heinz BBQ and curry versions and could live on them. Otherwise? Rarely.

grafittiartist · 20/09/2020 13:09

Loads in this house.
They are a great source of protein and cheap. Kids love them.
Can't beat beans on toast.

DramaAlpaca · 20/09/2020 13:11

Around once a week now it's just DH and. When the DC were living at home it'd be around 4 cans a week as they love beans on toast or waffles.

timetest · 20/09/2020 13:17

Once a week with a baked potato. It’s my go to comfort quick lunch.

Whalewhale · 20/09/2020 13:18

One tin a week between DH, DC and I. I love them but both DH and DC don't Sad

Ilovesausages · 20/09/2020 13:23

Loads here. Probably 3 or 4 tins a week on average.

Bingobongo1 · 20/09/2020 13:32

2-3 a week dependent on our meal plan.
Beans on toast, with sausage and chips, in a chilli/stew.

Wiaa · 20/09/2020 13:32

We probably have about 4 on average, I put them in pasta bakes, sausage casseroles as well as cooked breakfasts and on jacket potatoes. Dh doesn't eat veg so he eats more than we do and will have them as quick tea if he's late home or me and the dc have had something else earlier.

ImFree2doasiwant · 20/09/2020 13:35

1 of the half sized tins a week, or less. Ds1 loves them, ds2 hates them. I'll eat them if they need eating. Ds1 will often choose to have them at school so I dobt give them very often at home.

Crinkle77 · 20/09/2020 13:38

I live with my mum and we probably eat them a couple of times a week so I'd say 2 tins.

PaperMonster · 20/09/2020 15:02

I can’t eat them as they send my blood sugars loopy; OH and child usually have a can between them during the week.

Anordinarymum · 20/09/2020 15:20

@unicornparty

None , disgusting things.Grin
Ah go on.. you are anonymous on here.. tell the truth. Even middle folks like the odd can a beanz
Itwasaquarterpast11 · 20/09/2020 15:23

Probably 2 or 3 times a year we might have beans on toast. I don't dislike them, but they are a long way down the list of things I would fancy.

Oblomov20 · 20/09/2020 15:26

Loads. On jacket potatoes, on toast.

vanillandhoney · 20/09/2020 15:50

Maybe a tin a week on average? Two adults, no DC here. I probably get a six pack of Heinz every month or so.

KatherineofTarragon · 20/09/2020 16:06

Never, anymore.

I worked with many and was great friends with, a very sophisticated french girl who fed her young DS frogs legs. I commented how horrible i found that , to which she replied " you english girls feed your sons that baked bean merde " ( french for shit). She knew i served beans as she had lived with me briefly , a few years before when she split up with her boyfriend and needed a safe place to stay. She stayed with me and my first DS in my home for a while. She witnessed me serving baked beans.

I felt such a failure as a mother at the time that i have not bought them since. I still use the french bean recipes she me introduced me to and cooked for us. Also , the raclette which i bought ( she introduced me to that too) and now use for getting veg into my kids.

I personally still love a baked bean tin, i occasionally buy a tin on child free weekend and have with a baked potato and cheese. 😉

If it were not for the French , i would serve baked beans weekly!

Nothing wrong with baked bean tin in moderation!

The more i think about this who cares what the French think anyway!

ODFOx · 20/09/2020 23:17

Katherine that is so sad! One of the French National dishes is baked beans with ham in but they call it cassoulet!

I like the Heinz tinned ones with the mini sausages in as well. Goes nicely on toast with a bit of grated cheese sprinkled on top for lunch.
