We aren't a gaming family and my girls havent been massively interested in games (just to set the scene, and explain our level of ignorance)

But they played lego movie at alton towers (not sure if its 360 or xbox 1) and we had been thinking of getting them a second hand xbox360 with a load of games, including lego movie for xmas as they really liked it.

We are on v low budget this year (corona) and I know they'll hapily play together for a while but its unlikely to become their main passion.

Will an xbox 360 do? I can see them on marketplace with games in budget. I can see they're now old though. But we could find second hand games quite cheap. Does the connect thing work for dance games?

Would we regret not geting an xbox 1?

Is the xbox 1 the one they can talk to friends on? I dont know how far I want to go down that route but she has done that in minecraft on the laptop.. but probably not in the last few weeks!

I dont really want to pay a subscription.

Do you have to unplug the telly each time?

We're likely to want dance games, lego movie, other lego games, maybe some other fun "family" games?

Thankyou.

They're just bringing out a new Xbox so the Xbox 360 will be two consoles old by the time they get it. Depends how low your budget is.

There's a budget option of an Xbox One S which comes either with a disc drive or a digital version which only plays online games or games in the cloud via a monthly subscription.

It's worth looking at all the options available. I'd be inclined to go for something newer than an Xbox 360 and there's no knowing how much use a second hand one has had and how long it will last.

Thankyou. I don't think I realised quite how old! We could get a second hand xbox 1 bundle, and a few 360games as they're cheap to go with it? I think I've read its backwards compatible.

I'm not really sure about the differences between them. I think wed want a disc drive thing as don't want to get tied into a subscription!

It's strange as we've lost most our income and now on UC so we are relearning budgetting!

I would probably go for xbox 1 and I think youd need digital copies of 360 games rather than disk. The have stopped producing xbox 1 however I would suspect quite a few get traded in when the new console drops.

I was considering one recently and there was only about £60 differen between the 1and the digital only new version.

I'd hold off as the xbox 1 will reduce massively in price after November.
It is a bit of an investment as you can access Netflix and YouTube through it while having a blue ray DVD player.
Try local sites with good seller reviews people will be looking for a quick sale so they can invest in the new model.
CEX is great for a second hand item as they cover 12 months warranty if it breaks.

Emeraldshamrock · 20/09/2020 09:32

I'd buy disk over digital as you can trade games in after use for a decent price if they are on disk.

We only have 1 tv, so wont need it for netflix/you tube as we already have it throught the tv.

It's really just to have fun with a few games on occasionally. Eg they like the look of lego movie game and the dance game.

So our requirements arent high, we don't need to "invest" but I want it to work and work properly!

Yes plug it in and connect the second wire from the xbox into a hdmi port at the back of the TV.
People will be trying to shift the xbox 1 from October, if you have an actual store like CEX selling second hand I'd buy through them for the warranty.

Thankyou all so much. I feel so old!

Some games are back compatible but not all. The new Xbox is out 10 November so lots of people will be trading in their Xbox 1, do not buy a 360. Consider buying secondhand through GAME as they give a warranty. I never buy secondhand consoles, have gamed for years. Dust, smoke gets in them but shops test trade ins to make sure ok and then there is the warranty.

When you set up whichever one you buy make sure you set up full parental controls and DO NOT put your credit card on the console. Buy credit online from CD keys or in store for Microsoft points. Set up the strictest parental controls and block incoming messages from people unless they are on your children’s friends list, so have been added. My son was only allowed to add people he knew in real life. People fret about the actual games their kids play what they need to fret about is their children going in to any game with open game chat or joining parties. You don’t want want your child being told to suck a dick, get cancer, or they will fuck your Mom which is sadly stuff heard occasionally. People of all ages game, but many male teens do and they can be utterly vile, games have a community following. Some communities are far worse than others. One of the most toxic gaming communities is Overwatch, surprising isn’t it. I play an MMO which has a relatively decent community but still get the occasional pest.

Never have consoles in bedrooms. Always have plenty of time to relax the brain after gaming, it fires it up and pumps lots of Adrenalin round the body. Which is why people complain on MN about their kids shouting at fortnite.
