Dr uses vape clouds to illustrate how masks DO NOT work

I wear a mask because I have to. Not that I believe that they protect us. We’ve always been told they do not offer full protection.

Yet I watched a video yesterday of a Australian police man strangling a woman because she didn’t have a mask on.

Your not allowed in shops if you don’t have a mask on

Non mask wearers are being accused of causing the rise in infection.

They don’t fucking work!

Do fuck off dear

Bulblasagne · 19/09/2020 22:15

What mind utopia said.. Infact I have to speak with people quite closely day to day and that illustration gives me some relief actually. Its definitely deflecting all that aerosol from directly into someone's face!

Voice0fReason · 19/09/2020 22:26

@Greysparkles

As the video shows quite clearly - your breath comes through the mask

Where did you think it went?!
Seriously?
Where?

Exactly this!!

If you want your breath to stay contained within the mask you would need a sealed bag over your face. You would suffocate of course, but that would reduce the transmission.

You can continue to breathe through a mask. The spread of droplets that you breathe out are significantly reduced by the mask so the transmission rate is much lower.

@Snowjive2

You don’t know what “aerosol” means, do you, OP?
I do but just incase you dont -

In general, aerosols are liquid or solid particles suspended in air. (Tellier 2009; Judson 2019) They can be visible, like fog, but are most often invisible, like dust or pollen.

Aerosols are so small that buoyant forces overcome gravity, allowing them to say suspended in the air for long periods, or they evaporate before they hit the floor, leaving the solid particulate (“droplet nuclei”) free to float very long distances, causing what we often refer to as “airborne” transmission. (Nicas 2005; Judson 2019)

Bless you, op 🤣🤣🤣

How embarrassing to post such foolishness.

LastTrainEast · 19/09/2020 22:56

OP, my favourite bit was you telling us "your breath comes through the mask" like WE all thought it was airtight Grin

So why are you wearing a mask 🥴

Burnout101 · 19/09/2020 23:07

OP, considering masks are to limit covid spread in droplets coughed or sneezed ask yourself this -

If you were sitting just across from that bloke and he took a mouthful of water and coughed it straight out towards you, how wet would your face get if he wore no mask, compared to if he wore a mask, compared to if you both wore masks? The obvious answer to that question tells you what PPs on this thread have been trying to get across to you already.

AfterSchoolWorry · 19/09/2020 23:08

I vape. When I exhale vape I push it out.

Nothing like normal tidal breathing.

Veterinari · 19/09/2020 23:10

@Crockof
Do you have a peer reviewed article for this. I see it spouted on MN regularly but have not read anything that backs it up.

For what specifically?
No I don't have a peer reviewed article for my entire post, but there are plenty on surgical mask saturation, and on mouth-hand transmission of COVID (it's why handwashing was pushed so hard)

You may need to be more specific

Veterinari · 19/09/2020 23:12

@blacksax

There's no evidence that masks work to reduce COVID infection

On the other hand, there's no evidence to prove that they don't work, so on balance, it's worth trying.

Not if they distract from measures that do work.
Toontown · 19/09/2020 23:13

Masks work by reducing the amount if vapour that contain a virus passing into the air. Not all of it but most of it. Therefore reducing the likelihood of passing on a virus. That alongside social distancing helps reduce spreading the infection. Not 100% but more than not wearing one.

Thisismytimetoshine · 19/09/2020 23:14

Not if they distract from measures that do work.
In what way are they doing that?

AfterSchoolWorry · 19/09/2020 23:20

COVID particles are smaller than smoke particles. Check for yourself if you don’t believe me

Smoke?

Are you conflating smoke with vapour?

They are two different things.

Moondust001 · 19/09/2020 23:20

*There's no evidence that masks work to reduce COVID infection.

Surgical masks work to prevent droplets being coughed out but within 10-20 minutes are entirely saturated with respiratory secretions. This time period is probably much shorter for many fabric face coverings.*

This is a misreading of the research. The research you are quoting examines the effects of mask wearing and transmission in people who already have severe respiratory conditions / where the researchers replicated coughing arising from such a condition.

I would hope that people down the supermarket don't actually have such symptoms.

Masks are no panacea for any infection control, but play a part. Handwashing alone isn't effective either. Nor is social distancing alone. Masks play a part, when worn correctly and within the guidance for the specific type of mask, in reducing transmission. Saying they don't work is ridiculous. Of course they work. Not 100%, but nor will anything else, and that includes, when it eventually arrives, a vaccine.

AfterSchoolWorry · 19/09/2020 23:22

OP, did you think that masks were airtight? 😆😆😆

amusedtodeath1 · 19/09/2020 23:26

I thought it was common knowledge that face covering don't stop Covid from escaping. What it does do though is defuses the exhalation to go more upward than out, thus ensuring that less people can catch it.

This is not news and doesn't mean that masks are useless, just that you misunderstood their purpose.

Burnout101 · 19/09/2020 23:26

Well, airtight masks ARE much more effective at stopping covid spread to be fair, the science is irrefutable. The death toll starts skyrocketing with them though 🤣

TheSeedsOfADream · 19/09/2020 23:29

Embarrassed for you OP.
If you go into settings you can namechange.

We could all just shove our heads in a Tupperware box. Nowt as airtight as Tupperware. Grin
Lilybet1980 · 19/09/2020 23:31

As the video shows quite clearly - your breath comes through the mask.

OP would you prefer a mask that creates a perfect seal around the mouth and nose?

onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/irv.12745

Talks about non airtight medical masks rather than fabric masks but concludes they offer similar protection as n95 masks against Covid for non aerosol generating procedures. So saying that non airtight masks do work.

Even homemade masks could block 90% of covid virus particles.

Looks a bit long and science-y that does. Have you got a video of someone just telling me what to think without the boring evidence bit? Ta.
