Dr uses vape clouds to illustrate how masks DO NOT work

I wear a mask because I have to. Not that I believe that they protect us. We’ve always been told they do not offer full protection.

Yet I watched a video yesterday of a Australian police man strangling a woman because she didn’t have a mask on.

Your not allowed in shops if you don’t have a mask on

Non mask wearers are being accused of causing the rise in infection.

They don’t fucking work!

Well considering the WHO
( www.who.int/news-room/q-a-detail/q-a-how-is-covid-19-transmitted

considers COVID to be aerosol virus which can hang suspended in the air and be breathed in by other people I think this mask shows perfectly well how aerosols pass through a mask.

You were told by a bunch of advisers they work after people were demanding they were worn. They are useless.

Ok, I’ll bite. So the drops that are suspended in the air from vape ‘smoke’ are exactly the same as Covid airborne particles are they? Same size/weight/density etc? They behave exactly the same way? Move in the air the same way?

You may as well show a video of him gargling with liquid nitrogen for all the useful comparison you’re going to get from that video.

At the very least I’d want to see him sneeze with vape ‘smoke’ in his mouth with 1) a mask on and 2) a mask off to see the difference in how far/how much of the vapour escapes with/without a mask. Honestly there are so many holes and inconsistencies in his argument that you’d be better listing the things he did correctly.

I can’t even think of one.

Iggly · 19/09/2020 21:37

Once saturated with respiratory secretions they are a vector for infection and EVERY time they are touched/adjusted that respiratory secretions is transferred to hands. How often does that happen at your local supermarket?

Wear a mask and remove it properly. Keep your distance and make sure you’re in well ventilated places (outside is best) if you’re in contact with others.

Masks do work.

I’d rather take a chance with a mask than not, when I’m inside.

Why are people so keen to demonise masks. Do they want covid!???

My experience is that they want to show that they're free-thinkers, while sharing the same bullshit and adopting the same script as all the other conspiracy theorists and calling rational people 'sheeple'.

I think just breathing out should suffice. COVID is an aerosol infection it’s on tiny particles of your breath. As the video shows quite clearly - your breath comes through the mask.

There's no evidence that masks work to reduce COVID infection

On the other hand, there's no evidence to prove that they don't work, so on balance, it's worth trying.

considers COVID to be aerosol virus which can hang suspended in the air and be breathed in by other people I think this mask shows perfectly well how aerosols pass through a mask.

It's true that the virus can be found in aerosolised droplets (rather than the bigger droplets which don't hang around long). What's not certain is how small a droplet and how big a dose is needed for infection to occur.

If masks have no effect then probably nothing does because some amount of the virus can get through even hospital grade air filtration. If that were so it would be as infectious as ebola, but it's nowhere near.

The truth is that all these measures are about reducing risk. If you and an infected party are both wearing masks then that's two layers of material- reducing the size and amount of droplets which can penetrate.

Even if you got enough of a dose to pick up covid you would have a much lower viral load and less chance of a severe case.

People who think they no better than experts about hand washing, masks or whatever are fools. We should all try to minimise risk where practicable and then get on with our lives.

Yep - I wonder if they realise how bored the rest of us are with their theories.

stella47 · 19/09/2020 22:00

Hahaha no. Obviously you've got to be able to breathe through a mask! The idea is that it may not entirely block all particles of the virus from getting through but it drastically reduces the "dose" and so the severity of infection. The main routes of transmission are now found to be droplet and airborne transmission, and the best way to reduce these is by 1. Wear a mask (stops droplets and reduces airborne particles) 2. Physically distancing by at least 2 m. ; and 3. Improving air flow (meet in open air/open windows/use air purifiers)

FiveToFour · 19/09/2020 22:01

Isn't he at one point wearing the sort of mask that needs fit testing, but without fit testing it?
If you google evidence for face masks reducing the transmission of Covid ,you get at least a page of studies and reviews ( scientific papers etc ) saying ,yes masks do help.So actual science seems to say yes to masks at the moment.

Snowjive2 · 19/09/2020 22:01

You don’t know what “aerosol” means, do you, OP?

stella47 · 19/09/2020 22:02

Absolutely.

Ironically there are loads of them about - they’re hardly innovative free thinkers. They’ve got their ideas from the internet and are not engaging critical thinking themselves.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 19/09/2020 22:08

Yawn, let's not feed the trolls.

Masks do work, yes air can pass through them, but the material catches most of the aerosol droplets that contain the virus and stop them from being expelled as they normally would. Stop being a twat

DoTheNextRightThing · 19/09/2020 22:09

Ah yes, a random YouTube video of a man whose credentials we know nothing about. Of course that is who you should take your health advice from.

Just wear your mask and stop trying to disprove science.

Covid does not travel as solitary viral particles. It hitches a ride on droplets. You’re the one who is wrong here.
