Sherlock Holmes questions. (The books only)

I live Sherlock Holmes and know the books practically off by heart. But some things still puzzle me.

  1. why does Irene Adler fly the country. As she says." I love, and am loved by a better man than he"
Since she promises to leave the king alone. Why does she leave the country in such a hurry?

  2. if Moriarty is so intelligent. Why does he miss the Boat Train, in the final problem and have to hire a special train?

I'm off sick and bored ridged and these questions have been annoying me for ages

I'm definitely not an expert on Holmes so you may not think this is right, but I think perhaps......

Irene wants to keep the incriminating papers/photo as insurance that she will stay safe. If she stays in England she is sure Holmes will manage to steal it. (She doesn't fully realise the respect he has for her).

Moriarty had lost track of Holmes after the attempts on Holmes' life and didn't know Holmes' plans. Holmes was aware Moriarty would follow Watson and so was leading him to the continent in order to deal with him. (But he didn't want Moriarty on the same train, as he wanted the confrontation to be on the continent where he could dispose of him for good.) So Holmes ensured that Moriarty wasn't sure that he was on the train with Watson until the train was pulling out, (until that moment Moriarty didn't know that Watson wasn't a misdirection).

Holmes does say later "There are limits to our friend's intelligence" He and Holmes are quite equally matched.
