Snacks vs meals for kids?

Just wondering what others do. I have 3 DC, one is just a baby so not really counting him yet but I have one who is a dust bin and very slim and one who loves food but needs to trim down a bit.

What do others do? I have always fed snacks frequently thinking that's what toddlers need, but the eldest is now five and is getting out of healthy weight range. Is it better to serve 3 square meals? I find this easier to portion control than trying to add up snacks, but when googling I find a lot of these saying snacking is better.

However - I did notice a few of the articles mentioned brands like Swisse Me and Organix so may have been sponsored? How do you feed your DC if they are past the toddler stage?

I offered a drink first and said come back in half an hour if you're still hungry.
I also offered snacks they didn't really like. If they took it I knew they were genuinely hungry.
