Would you pay for free food?

My favourite independent takeaway has started giving meals away for free with a 'suggested donation' rather than charging people.

Usually food is around £7 but when i went today I was told 'this food is a gift, if you want to pay then pay us whatever you feel.'

I paid the suggested donation but worried it will go bust! So wondering if in general people would pay?

Huh why

Redglitter · 18/09/2020 17:28

Id pay but what's the thinking behind them giving it away

Why are they doing that?

SapphosRock · 18/09/2020 17:29

I've no idea why! I'm wondering if it's a tax thing. So if they're giving food away rather than charging they don't have to pay business rates or something.

Eh? Presumably there will be a queue a mile long once the news spreads. Is it some kind of advertising gimmick?

Wheytaminute · 18/09/2020 17:34

Yes I would pay a reasonable donation. Unless the owners have come into money and just want to treat everyone.

I hate stuff like that. Just tell me how much & I'll gladly pay. If it's done 'avoiding business rates' type thing -fine. Right now I'll pay you however you want it if oats your rent/feeds your kids... but don't leave me in the uncertainty void that is 'free but make a donation'

As it is I'm not buying takeaway, but I rarely did ore Covid, so they're not missing me! & the only place I bought takeaway from (Indian that is SO good, but carbs ) is & has been doing a roaring trade throughout.
