I'm going to visit my mother on Sunday, she lives an hour away. DS wants to stay in our home town and go out with his friends.

DS dad will be 10 mins away from DS, in the next village.

Would you do this?

Yes. There are few holiday provisions for 13 year olds. Most stay at home while parents work.

I think it depends on the child , a grown up 13 yr old would be ok but a less mature one maybe not so much .
You know your DC best , trust your instincts, perhaps put some food together so DS can make / heat a easy lunch .
