Boring car tax question

We’re just sorting out a new car pick up tomorrow, and the garage is having our car as part ex.

GOV.uk won’t let us cancel car tax on old car until the day (can’t do it in advance). That’s fine, I can do tomorrow.

But for the new car, it won’t be taxed. Are we right in reading that you need to sort the tax out (assuming online on your phone) before leaving the car forecourt?

It seems so strange but I don’t want DH to get caught out on the 5 mile drive home without car tax.

Anyone done this recently?

You can pay for your tax by phone - just call the DVLA on 0300 123 43211_ and have your V5C or V5C/2 to hand.

When I bought a second hand car about 5 years ago, I sorted the tax at the dealership on their computer on the day of pick up. HTH.

Yep it’s what we had to do when we bought from a dealer last year and when we sold The predecessor privately a few months ago the buyers sat in their car on our drive while they sorted on their phone. It’s easy peasy once you know how.

I've bought 3 new cars in the last 3 years. Each time, the dealership/seller has let me do the tax on their computer on pick up day.

Perfect, that’s fine, we’ll ask dealership or do on our phones.
It’s years since we’ve done this - his old one is 13 years old and I’ve always had a company car so never had to get involved in tax.

Decided he’s going to pick up and he can phone me with the V5 details and I’ll do from home. It sounds like the phone method might be easy too, so see he can do it (this is the man who hates paying for parking on those app / ring through numbers 🤣🙄)
