Where has the common cold been hiding?

You'd think the common cold (that my kids are full of, as are half the school kids I know) wouldn't be spreading with all of the measure in place to prevent a virus from spreading.

And where was it hiding? In the carpets at school?

Spreading on a low level throughout lockdown I suppose. Most viruses can't last that long in carpet. Even with all the hygiene measures in place, when you put 30 children together in a room, things will spread. Sitting a metre apart doesn't stop things spreading via coughs and sneezes. Alcohol gel doesn't kill all viruses.
