Profound deafness

Hi my daughter who is 6 is profound deaf in one ear, she can’t have an hearing aid as she’s completly deaf and I asked if she can have an operation they said no, so basically nothing can be done, she’s also very unbalanced falls all the time, I applied for dla to help her with day to day basis but it’s been declined has anyone else ever had this? I don’t see why would decline it many thanks

Why would they award it? What would you use the money for to help?

I’m interested not being snarky, but I suspect that’s what DLA would want to know also.

Did she have an MRI scan to rule out a cochlear implant?

That's a shame, is she deaf in both ears? I have a moderate hearing loss.

As for DLA it's about how you fill it in. It's assessed on what extra care they require, not based in diagnosis. There are people who can help you fill it in.

Can she hear ok in the other ear?

My manager can only hear with one ear. It doesn't seem to have affected her.

OP, can you expand on your opening post a bit?

Your DD is profoundly deaf in one ear. Does she have any cochlear function left in it at all. Does she has any cochlear function in the other ear?

Has she had MRI scans of her ears?

She may be suitable for hearing aid systems called CROS and BAHA.

My brother is completely deaf in one ear. It hasn't affected him at all really, just his peripheral hearing on that side isn't great. I'm blind in one eye too we make a right pair 😂 What do her school think? Could the balance issues be something else?

Good for her. My mum is completely deaf in one ear and has been since childhood. She said it had a massive impact on her education as she missed a lot, background noise makes listening to voices very difficult.

Is there absolutely no way your dd could get a cochlear implant? Is your dd being monitored by paediatric audiology or speech & Language? They can help point you towards support groups, advice and additional help you might be able to get for your dd.

Some children are very seriously affected by not having stereophonic hearing, particularly if the causes also mean a greater chance of imbalance. Some children learn to partially lip-read, some don't - and in an age of masks it's becoming less likely that children will 'just pick it up'.I

It needs proper monitoring and diagnosis via ENT and audiology. (Easier said than done these days.)

Yes she’s had an MRI scan they said she has an enlarged vestibular aqueduct which is inside her ear and her nerve so nothing can be done :-(

Contact the National deaf children's society they have family officers who can help and guide you through issues with DLA, education and medical treatment
