Clueless about phone for 11 year old - help!

I’m such a dinosaur. My 11 year old ‘needs’ a phone and I’m happy to get her one (I have an old iPhone she can have) but how do people go about it?? What’s the best deal, to add her to my contract or PAYG or what? I’ve had a contract for a million years so I am well out of the loop....thanks!!

I started this the other day, might be helpful.

My 11 year olds have a smarty contract (£6) each. The more people in the household that have it the bigger discounts. You also get money off for not using all the data. My 16 year old has the £10 contract which is 30gb. It's a rolling one month contract too. When I looked into it was cheaper than a pay as you go.
