Did I accused my friend or asked a question

So last Wednesday I went shopping with a friend. I had about 25 masks in a bag. I gave my friend 5 because they did not have.

Anyway we became separated for about 20 mins However my friend had the bag that contained the masks. I took my bag and we travelled home and parted to our respective homes.

I live alone. The following day I left home with the same bag. I went to retrieved a mask from the bag and they were all missing.

I called my friend and explained that my masks are missing, can S/he shed any light on them,

They laughed and said " don't know what you're talking about" so I said, this is serious, am out and I don't have any mask.

They laughed as if it was funny.

Two days later when I saw my friend s/he said " were you accused me of stealing " I am offended.

Was I wrong to asked given that they were the only person who had my bag?

Did I accused them of stealing?

It depends how you worded it I suppose:

'Did I leave the masks in the bag you had' not as bad as 'can you explain what happened to the masks'.

You accused them of taking your masks.

Had you bought the masks while you were out, or do you normally carry 25 masks with you?

I bought the masks previously. They are in my medical bag which I carry always.

If you said, ‘My masks are missing, can you shed any light on this?’ then it sounds quite accusatory. If you said, ‘Did I leave my masks in that bag you were carrying?’ it sounds as though you were politely asking a question.

Of course it sounds like you’re accusing your friend of stealing. How could you possibly think it doesn’t? They could have fallen out if she opened or put the bag down. You could have mislaid them. Why would she take your masks? If you genuinely believe she did, then why are you friends with someone like that?

They were in a zipped longchamp shoulder bag. They were removed from the original package and placed In a zip lock bag. The ziplock bag had gloves (black disposable ones) which are quite distinctive. Had they fallen out then the entire contents would have.

Tbh. I asked because they were the only person who had access to the bag.

I don't think enquiring about the masks is an accusation. Your friend could have answered with concern for you but got offended. Either way you both should make effort to straighten this out or it can't be a strong bond and maybe not worth the stress?
