Why do people say "Tesco's"?

Just that really. People seem to do it all the time. But it's not "Lidl's" or "Aldi's" or "Waitrose's", is it?!?!

Sainsbury's anyone?

jellybeanz1212 · 12/09/2020 13:08

I'm off to Asda's
Sorry

FedUpofLockdown123 · 12/09/2020 13:09

It drives me insane I don't know why but it does. I have heard Lidls and Aldis too (I think it's my mum who says this but not quite sure now 😂)

woodhill · 12/09/2020 13:09

Going to Marks laterSmile

CeeceeBloomingdale · 12/09/2020 13:10

Same reason as they say Mark and Spencer's, Sainsbury's etc

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 12/09/2020 13:10

It's funny isn't it.

I grew up with hearing "Tescose" as if it was a word like that. Similarly with Sainsburys, although that actually is their branding.

I didnt come across asda, lidl, aldi until I was grown up and it just never was their name!

It was Smith's, menzie's, Woolies, marks and sparks though then...

mrsnorrismeow · 12/09/2020 13:10

But "Sainsbury's" is actually called Sainsbury's, not Sainsbury. That's what the sign outside is. Whereas the sign outside Tesco is Tesco, not Tesco's!!

Asda's sounds very wrong!

Nikhedonia · 12/09/2020 13:11

Nowhere near as awful as people who say "Sainsbo's" 🥴🥴🥴

mrsnorrismeow · 12/09/2020 13:11

Marks and Spencer's is fine, I don't know why but it is.

OP posts:
whirlwindwallaby · 12/09/2020 13:12

They can't read the sign?

mrsnorrismeow · 12/09/2020 13:12

Oh yeah that's awful.

I dont think I ever hear anyone saying Tesco, and not Tesco's.

Tesco's and sainsbury's were the smae era so maybe that's why?

Pelleas · 12/09/2020 13:13

You are correct, as, unlike Sainsbury's, Tesco was never the name of the owner - it's an amalgamation of (Jack) Cohen and another company called TES.

However, it doesn't really bother me what people call their supermarket.

Thelnebriati · 12/09/2020 13:13

Its the difference between a hard stop (Asda) and a soft ending (o or ee) that needs an ending when you say it out loud.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 12/09/2020 13:14

Where i am from it is The Asda Grin as in "Im going The Asda do you want anything". Lord knows why as we have about a million Asdas nearby it's just the way it is!

I dont think we say Tescos.

I do say Marksies though.

Pansypotter123 · 12/09/2020 13:15

"Markses" sets my teeth on edge. I have no problem with M and S, or Marks and Spencer's, but "Markses" - just noooooo!!

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 12/09/2020 13:16

I thought everyone said Tesco's!!

iklboo · 12/09/2020 13:16

A former colleague said 'Sainzers'. No. Just no.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 12/09/2020 13:17

I miss Woolworths.

StCharlotte · 12/09/2020 13:18

I really can't get wound up with "Tescos" but there was a shop in our town called "Nobbs" (snigger) which a colleague used to call "Nobbses".

YouMakeABetterDoorThanAWinda · 12/09/2020 13:18

I’m going to the Co-op rather than I’m going to Co-op or Co-op’s. Hmm, never thought about it before. Nice but of random for my Saturday.

I wonder what Tessa Coen said?

BigFatLiar · 12/09/2020 13:19

I think it's just one of those words that it's easier to say or sounds better when you add the extra s.

Kljnmw3459 · 12/09/2020 13:21

Sounds better.

TheChippendenSpook · 12/09/2020 13:21

It drives me nuts too. Everything does today though!
