Why do people say "Tesco's"?

Just that really. People seem to do it all the time. But it's not "Lidl's" or "Aldi's" or "Waitrose's", is it?!?!

It drives me insane I don't know why but it does. I have heard Lidls and Aldis too (I think it's my mum who says this but not quite sure now 😂)

I grew up with hearing "Tescose" as if it was a word like that. Similarly with Sainsburys, although that actually is their branding.

I didnt come across asda,lidl,aldi until I was grown up and it just never was their name!

It was Smith's, menzie's, Woolies, marks and sparks though then...

But "Sainsbury's" is actually called Sainsbury's, not Sainsbury. That's what the sign outside is. Whereas the sign outside Tesco is Tesco, not Tesco's!!

I dont think I ever hear anyone saying Tesco, and not Tesco's.

Tesco's and sainsbury's were the smae era so maybe that's why?

You are correct, as, unlike Sainsbury's, Tesco was never the name of the owner - it's an amalgamation of (Jack) Cohen and another company called TES.

However, it doesn't really bother me what people call their supermarket.

Its the difference between a hard stop (Asda) and a soft ending (o or ee) that needs an ending when you say it out loud.

Where i am from it is The Asda as in "Im going The Asda do you want anything". Lord knows why as we have about a million Asdas nearby it's just the way it is!

"Markses" sets my teeth on edge. I have no problem with M and S, or Marks and Spencer's, but "Markses" - just noooooo!!

I really can't get wound up with "Tescos" but there was a shop in our town called "Nobbs" (snigger) which a colleague used to call "Nobbses".

I think it's just one of those words that it's easier to say or sounds better when you add the extra s.
