Why do people say "Tesco's"?

mrsnorrismeow · 12/09/2020 13:05

Just that really. People seem to do it all the time. But it's not "Lidl's" or "Aldi's" or "Waitrose's", is it?!?!

OP posts:
Anordinarymum · 12/09/2020 20:41

I don't say it because I would not dream of shopping there. So there.

Mmsnet101 · 12/09/2020 20:42

In my home town we have a 'wee tesco' (previously a Menzies) and a 'big tescos' which is actually tesco xtra.

People also say aldis, Lidls etc though so it's just the way it is. We don't have an Asda or Waitrose though.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 12/09/2020 20:45

@FlowerPig I say Home and Bargains as well. Yet another scousism!

bookmum08 · 12/09/2020 20:49

I have a Sainsbury's nearby that everyone calls The Big Sainsbury's (cos it's massive). Everyone knows which one you mean when you say it. It's used as a landmark for directions - as in "I went to so and so down by The Big Sainsbury's".
All the other Sainsbury's in the area just get called Sainsbury's.

BitterAndTwistedChoreDodger · 12/09/2020 20:50

A friend of mine always calls Matalan 'Mataland', which annoys me.

TBF, I still cal H&M Hennes, which probably gives someone the rage.

tywysoges · 12/09/2020 20:55

I’ve never heard B&Q’s but in a similar fashion to M&S, it was named after their founders and the original name was Block & Quayle Grin so it would be ok(ish)?

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 12/09/2020 20:55

@mrsnorrismeow

Why. Do. You. Care?

I don't, particularly. I just fancied a lighthearted thread for some time away from the endless corona-and-brexit misery. I didn't realise I had to only start threads about a pre approved list of worthier topics Confused

It could have been - should have been - lighthearted but, anytime that people do something differently, or refer to anything in an unusual way, the snob-mist descends on some posters and they heckle/critique with judgement so it's not really that lighthearted then perhaps?

I was quite interested reading the thread and then found it grating and I'm not even guilty of the 'transgressions'. I mean, if you're going to happen upon a thread and find reference to 'awful', 'wrong' 'drives me insane' over something as non-offensive as how somebody refers to a shop then I can see why a couple of posters have questioned it.

It's almost as if nobody can say anything without being picked up on what they've said... and so the cycle goes on.

Sorry OP, just musing. Your posts didn't grate. I was going to mention 'Carrefour', and 'Leo's' but they're no longer here... Grin

peakotter · 12/09/2020 20:56

I think that @Justjoinedforthis has it right. It doesn’t rhyme with “get their best clothes” otherwise....

FlowerPig · 12/09/2020 20:58

@BobbinThreadbare123 Yeah Liverpool!

I remember being so gobsmacked when I discovered it isn't and never has been home and bargain 😆

Nomorescreentime · 12/09/2020 21:13

Interesting. It’s Tesco’s for me. Also Asda’s, Aldi’s...but Waitrose would be weird said the same. It’s The kwop here for the Co-Op.

I’m valleys Welsh though and so also say Preemark, which is a different thread I suspect...

bookmum08 · 12/09/2020 21:21

Oh yes Nomore the Pree -mark vs Pri - mark debate is a big one.

McGriffo · 12/09/2020 22:22

@FlowerPig The original Liverpool shop was called Home and Bargain.

mrsnorrismeow · 13/09/2020 00:15

I say that and I'm a Londoner!

OP posts:
bookmum08 · 13/09/2020 00:23

I am London too and I say 'Pree-mark'.

AlwaysLatte · 13/09/2020 00:34

I don't say Tesco's - there's no second S. or Waitroses!!

RickOShay · 13/09/2020 04:46

My sister and I call Morrisons mozzers Grin

brushandmop · 13/09/2020 05:08

My Scottish mother says "Markies" for M & S.

When I lived in UK we would say "big" Tesco or "little" Tesco depending on which branch we were going too.

Brits love to make wee sayings which I really miss living in NZ. Devoid of any fun here. Our supermarkets are Countdown, New World and Pak N Save. No abbreviations

shesellsseashells99 · 13/09/2020 05:39

Mark's and Sparks

shesellsseashells99 · 13/09/2020 05:40

I say Tesco's

shesellsseashells99 · 13/09/2020 05:40

@bookmum08

I am London too and I say 'Pree-mark'.
I say Primarni Wink
Zoflorabore · 13/09/2020 05:47

Wavescrashingonthebeach

I was about to write the same re: “The Asda” and I think we’re from the same place, got to be Smile

Im in Knowsley so assuming you’re near me/Liverpool. Everyone says it!

Sheknowsaboutme · 13/09/2020 06:08

Mataland grates on me. How difficult is it?

Oohmegooliebird · 13/09/2020 06:26

Hairdresser's , optician's is a shortening of hairdresser's salon or optician's shop. Makes far more sense than going 'to the hairdresser' You don't go to a person. You may go to see them or have an appointment with them.

The Co-op also makes sense because you are going to the cooperative shop.

I think I'm guilty of Tesco's.

sashh · 13/09/2020 08:18

Named after Jesse Boot so should be Boot's. But perhaps he foresaw that no one would actually give a toss about grammar

But it was named after his father, and he worked there with his mother so it should be Boots' as in the Boot family.

Frazzled2207 · 13/09/2020 08:26

@Oohmegooliebird
I’ll have to respectfully disagree!
When I go to a doctor/hairdresser I most certainly do go and see a specific person!
Optician granted is a bit different but I rarely go there Smile
