Why do people say "Tesco's"?

Just that really. People seem to do it all the time. But it's not "Lidl's" or "Aldi's" or "Waitrose's", is it?!?!

@frazzled2207

Respectfully I think you misunderstood my point! Yes you 'go to see' a particular person, but you don't 'go to' a person that doesn't make sense. You go to a place. You wouldn't say you are 'going to your grandma'. You say you are going to see your grandma, or going ' to grandma's' as in going to your grandma's house.

I've heard John Menzies called "Mingus" ( I was completely Confused ) apparantly it's how it is pronounced - like Menzies Campbell known as Ming Campbell !

Yes, that's how it should be, but I think companies often don't care or bother correcting common mispronunciations, as long as people keep spending. Many employees won't even know it themselves. When I was in Prezzo for the first time (only time - wasn't that impressed), I asked the woman on the desk whether it should be 'Preh-zoh'. 'PreTT-zoh' or something else ahnd she told me she didn't have a clue.

Some deliberately play on the local natural mispronunciations, such as Lidl, where the common way of saying it for English speakers changes it to make it sound like the word 'little' ('only need to spend a Lidl', 'always Lidl prices' etc.).

In its earlier days Lidl was pronounced Leedle here! I rang their HO about a product that was out of stock for ages & the voice definitely said Leedle, not Lidl Grin

But as Lidl is how we all say it it made sense for them to change, & Middle of Lidl is genius!

I don't know actually - I don't do it with them all. I say Tesco's, Sainburys, Marks and Spencers but I don't add an 's' to Aldi, Lidl or Asda because that's just weird Grin

I was really weirded out when I heard an Ikea advert for the first time and it was pronounced Ick-ee-er Shock. I'll never call it that and everyone would think I was a moron if I did.

Agreed! Although it'll always be the 'Surprise Aisle' to me! One thing I never quite understand, though, is the 'food specials' semi-aisle next to the Surprise Aisle - it always just seems to be identical (or very similar) things as you can find in the rest of the store, but at significantly higher prices. They've had tins of beans a few times for over a quid each! Is it actually meant to be special deals or is supposed to be aspirational for those who aren't quite able to push the boat out far enough for Waitrose?!

Still, they must be eternally infuriated that Tesco got there first with 'Every little helps' Grin
