DS inbetween bike sizes. WWYD?

DS just tried some bikes at Halfords. 20 inch too small, 24 too big and I have looked online and nowhere does a 22!

Would you get him a cheap one for now, or leave it a bit? His current bike is wayyyyyy too small. Not really rideable for him but with it approaching winter, I'm not sure how much he would use it anyway.
I don't think he will be big enough for 24 by xmas either.

I definitely wouldn't get a 20 inch if it is already too small.

Can you pick up a second hand 20" now, and then buy him a new 24" when he's bigger?
If hes a confident rider, he might manage a 24". Do you know what size he has now?
How old is he?

If you shop around you should be able to get a smaller frame size. My children are all tiny but wanted bikes as big as their friends.
From memory I think Ridgeback were quite small and frog bikes do different frame sizes too

I'm surprised that he doesn't fit one or the other - DD switched from a 20" to a 24" over the summer, and the highest we could get the saddle on the 20" was higher than the lowest point on the 24". Was the saddle right up/down? If reach on the 24" is a problem (it is for DD) then you can turn the handlebars over (and move the brake levers!) to make them a bit lower.

This is what I was thinking. Buy cheap for now.

His current bike is 14inch I think. IT is the bike he got when he was 4 and he is turning 8 soon. He refused to learn to ride it without stabilisers until lockdown and we took them off 18months ago so he wasn't using it.

BMX?
I saw a BMX hybrid today in SMyths. Think I will take him to try it out next weekend.

There are some charities who sell refurbed bikes quite cheaply - we picked one up for DS when he was inbetween size - about £30 for a nice one.
