6yo Nintendo Switch vs Xbox (Minecraft)

My DS has asked for an xbox for his 6th birthday. Its because he loves minecraft and we have a ps3 which is an old version that isnt updated. He played an older boys xbox and loved it. I think it's mostly the updated minecraft he likes vs the actual console.

I dont really mind about video games within limits. Minecraft saved us both during lockdown.

My dilemma is whether to get him a nintendo switch instead...

I feel like the nintendo switch is more age appropriate. More fun non violent games. I see you can get minecraft for it.

I hate roblox for it's pointless violence so easier to shut down any requests for.that if it's not available on nintendo.

But I guess he'll get more.years out of the xbox. Plus I feel like the ability to play remotely with mates might be better on xbox.

Does anyone have experience of consoles at this age?

My DC is older (11) and loves his switch. It’s an excellent console as far as I can tell. Really adaptable and great games. Good for Minecraft too.

The switch is a really good console for kids. DS2 is 11 and loves his switch. DS1 uses his at 20. There’s no reason he’d grow out of it and not an Xbox.

The fact you can have it handheld, on the tv and also play multiplayer using just the screen on the console is very useful.

My kids are 5 and 7. They have a switch each (waiting to get flamed for that). They both absolutely love minecraft.

DH has an Xbox so technically there is one in the house. But I agree with you on the whole Xbox vs Nintendo thing. For their age, the Nintendo has much more appropriate games. It also doesn't have roblox. I cannot stand roblox!! DH will occasionally let them play roblox on the Xbox, but it is a rare occurrence and closely monitored!!

The Xbox is getting updated at Christmas as well, there is a new model coming out soon, so I wouldn't rush to buy one just yet because it will be obsolete soon.

@Fatted your kids are a similar age to mine and like minecraft - what other games have been a hit?

Switch, not the Switch light which is just hand held

Mario kart is great. Your DS will love it.
Super Smash Bros is also great.

The Kirby games are great too (DS loved playing them on his 3DS at 6). Also Mario Odyssey. Pokemon.

Many others. DS mostly plays bloody fortnite and rocket league with his friends these days. You should be spared fortnite with a 6 year old (and spared hearing the rubbish 11 year olds talk when playing it). Rocket league is football with little cars though and good fun.

Switch would be more exciting for his age

Switch. My four kids have them and they are all in their 20's.

Switch, when we want the TV back there is no drama. Also, they can use them on the move, on holiday, etc.
