Costco what to buy?

This is my second visit, last time I got toilet and kitchen roll, washing capsules and fabric softner etc.
What else is good? Frozen food etc?
TIA 😆

Is stuff cheaper at Costco? Like actually genuinely cheaper?

diplodocusinermine · 11/09/2020 11:48

Some stuff is cheaper but it's generally much better quality produce for the same price you'd pay at a high street supermarket.

I don’t think it’s cheaper compared to Aldi or Lidl.

Yes. Especially when on offer. And you buy in bulk so it reduces the unit cost.

But most stuff is branded.

Kirkland brand is not necessarily as cheap as supermarket own brands. But so much better quality.

Take Kirkland baby wipe for example. They are more expensive per wipe than most , but you need to use fewer wipes.

Kitchen roll is the same.

You have to pay a membership fee. Although our membership means we get cash back so it pretty much pays for itself.

WaxOnFeckOff · 11/09/2020 12:07

A lot of stuff is generally cheaper or same price but bigger pack. Own make is far superior to most supermarkets for similar price.

But it's like supermarket deal prices but always on. So, for example, sometimes I can get cereal for £2 a box in supermarket, sometimes £3 but I can always get it £4 for two in Costco.

Things like part baked breads, you can get a pack of 5 for not much more than a single pack in supermarket.

I can get a massive amount of cod for say £15, in supermarket that would only buy some very small pieces.

The danger is you pay to buy in bulk and don't use it all so the bargain is wasted, the other danger is that you buy "extras" you wouldn't normally get so overspend on things you technically didn't go for and don't need.

You learn to buy a bit more carefully and we tend to just buy the specifics and don't loiter browsing too much.

LeSquigh · 11/09/2020 13:45

We have a petrol station at ours so that’s worth the membership fee alone. We buy

Pastries
The big bag of rolls
Baby wipes
Cooked chicken
Pizza (cooked and ready to cook)
Cans of soft drinks
Bottles of water
Kitchen rolls and toilet rolls - however this is more for convenience and quality rather than price as both are cheaper in the supermarket
Tinned tomatoes

The meat quality is great but I just don’t have the room to store it. I would buy a LOT more things from Costco if only I had the room...

They had some nice freeze at home ice pops last time we went. They had a penguin on. The cherry flavour is amazing!

usernotfound0000 · 11/09/2020 14:00

Cheesecake Factory cheesecake - frozen so can ration the deliciousness.
We also get chicken breasts, mince, tinned tomatoes, rice, coffee, tea bags, toilet roll, kitchen roll, tinned tuna. The large muffins are also delicious along with the lemon drizzle cake but I have to try hard to resist buying them as they are so large!

PaternosterLoft · 11/09/2020 14:06

usernotfound0000 Last time we got those muffins they were BOGOF as they were close to end date. I have never been unable to finish cake before but I was defeated by 12 muffins the size of a child's head. However they last about a week after the best before date, and are especially nice after a minute in the microwave with custard on top.

WaxOnFeckOff · 11/09/2020 14:37

when we bought them, we used to half and freeze the muffins and they come out lovely, kids used to like them micowaved with custard or with ice cream as a dessert.

I just don't have a big freezer so tend to prioritise meat and veg in it (and chicken nuggets!).

usernotfound0000 · 11/09/2020 14:59

Yes we warm them and have either ice cream or custard.

Gohackyourself · 11/09/2020 15:41

Bin bags, massive roll for around £7 and far superior to what you buy in supermarkets.
Fajita kits
Softener and detergent .
Cappuccino sachets ( 50 for 6.99)

Varjakpaw · 11/09/2020 16:18

Trays of passion fruit for the price of a couple of packs in Waitrose. Great big tubs of houmous.

00100001 · 12/09/2020 09:23

Oh the rolls of foil and cling film.

You get something ridiculous like 400m, but it's well worth it. Great quality.

StubbleTurnips · 12/09/2020 09:53

Toffee loaf cake
Lemon drizzle loaf cake
Part baked ciabattas
Galaxy hot chocolate
Baileys (when it’s a tenner a litre)
Books

I came home with the giant Halloween talking pumpkin last week (shouldn’t have taken the kids with me!).

FuglyHouse · 12/09/2020 10:32

Swedish meatballs
Italian style sausages
Marmite in a small bucket!

Decisivelyindecisive · 13/09/2020 11:24

We bought a roll of clingfilm in 2009 for our wedding...its still not empty! Grin

Thinking about it I have no idea of it's still food safe after this time Blush

BarbaraofSeville · 13/09/2020 11:33

That's what's putting me off the foil and cling film. We've still got a normal size roll of foil we bought on holiday 2 years ago.

A Costco size one might out live us as we don't use that much of it. We'd have to include it in our wills.

Kiki275 · 13/09/2020 11:51

Carex hand soap
Imperial leather
Dishwasher tabs
Bleach
Bold liquid
Catering foil

Danish pastries/ apple pie
Lurpak
Cheese
Salmon fillets
Rotisserie chicken

PaternosterLoft · 13/09/2020 11:55

Has anyone tried the hazelnut spread with chocolate? How does it compare to Nutella?

Splendidseptember · 13/09/2020 19:44

Barbra 😂😂.

I'm well jel on the foil, we stood in there like lost lambs and we didn't buy foil and we needed it.

Great thread! I'm making notes of everything to buy!

Splendidseptember · 13/09/2020 19:44

We did however have the rositier chicken and it was utterly delicious and so cheap!

00100001 · 16/09/2020 09:09

It's supposed to be really good. Plus no palm oil I believe Smile
TastelessBracelets · 17/09/2020 16:40

Well, we went today. We got the rolls of foil, greaseproof paper and cling film - DH was very keen on the idea of perpetual food coverings.

Then we came home and found I'd already bought the cling film at some point.

We're going to have to leave it to one of the DC in our wills, aren't we Grin
