Using a fake name in Starbucks etc... anyone else do this?

I went out with friends today and we grabbed a takeaway coffee and brunch from a local cafe. They needed a name for the order so I gave mine. As I walked away I noticed it felt weird cos normally I give a fake name in this sort of situation, if I’m alone. But as I didn’t want to appear a weirdo in front of my friends I didn’t on this occasion. My fake name is always the same one and is in part because I don’t like my real name and feel this one fits me better. It also became a habit when people repeatedly misheard the name I was giving, so would always cause confusion when calling out this wrong name when my order was ready. My real name is not hard or unusual but somehow this problem has never arisen with my fake name.
So I’m curious, does anyone else do this or am I just a weirdo? 😆

My friend has a very unusual name but just calls himself "James" in Starbucks or ordering food or taxis etc as it's so much easier.

No I just give my name because that's my name. I never even considered that people give fake names. It's just a coffee and no one else cares anyway!

@lookatmememe

I went to a cafe 1 yesterday and they wanted my name and phone number on my receipt for their records ( unless they just fancied me? But I very much doubt that!)

Was that not just trace and trace?

I have a complicated Irish name so I generally stick to Maria.

Haven't been in a starbucks in ages. Gave a fake name as nobody can ever spell my name. I'm always Lucy.
Lucky for me we don't have one locally and our good local café doesn't do this.

@FiveGoMadInDorset

My DS gave his name as Nigel last year, he is 12. I want to be brave and say Spartacus

I'm always Spartacus. Just for the brief lift it gives me GrinAnd I live in hope for the day when everyone else stands up to say "I am Spartacus!"

@elp30

My son just walked in from his job as a barista at Starbucks. I had him read this thread.

He's just shaken his head and groaned. He said, "Please just let me do my job. Thank you."

I suppose he's had a bit of a hard day.

Yeah this exactly. It's really self involved to think the staff actually care. Get over your selves!

Um maybe it was for track and trace? Hmm

DD has one of those Irish names that people can't pronounce or spell so she is Alice when she orders takeaway, she says she just can't be bothered to make things more complicated.

That made me chuckle. I am an Alice with an Irish surname. When I was in my late teens/early twenties I adopted the Irish “Ailís” spelling. Partly to be truculent, partly because I really fancied a guy from Waterford!!

Yes, when traveling abroad it is useful to pick some generic/common name. DH (non-English name) used to use the name of the president of the US at that time. He stopped with Barak though, and has not used Donald either!

I usually go for a shortening of my name. My full name isn’t that unusual but usually gets spelt or pronounced wrong anyway Confused

I like trying on different names in Starbucks. Last time, I was Ella. I've also been Jo, Lana, Clare and Jean. Next time, I'm going to be Olive.
