Using a fake name in Starbucks etc... anyone else do this?

I went out with friends today and we grabbed a takeaway coffee and brunch from a local cafe. They needed a name for the order so I gave mine. As I walked away I noticed it felt weird cos normally I give a fake name in this sort of situation, if I’m alone. But as I didn’t want to appear a weirdo in front of my friends I didn’t on this occasion. My fake name is always the same one and is in part because I don’t like my real name and feel this one fits me better. It also became a habit when people repeatedly misheard the name I was giving, so would always cause confusion when calling out this wrong name when my order was ready. My real name is not hard or unusual but somehow this problem has never arisen with my fake name.
So I’m curious, does anyone else do this or am I just a weirdo? 😆

No one spells my name right so I give a shortened version. But this reminds me of a meme I saw on Facebook about wanting to have a date with a mature, grown up man and the name on his Starbucks cup was Fondil Maballs Grin

nosswith · 09/09/2020 17:22

I don't go to Starbucks as they are tax avoiders. Other coffee places are available.

However, I don't blame you for using a nom de plume. You don't want to have some strange man subsequently try to chat you up having heard your name in a coffee shop.

BarkandCheese · 09/09/2020 17:23

I always use the shortened version of my name which is three letters and almost impossible to misspell. It’s never occurred to me people use fake names, but I can see if your name is quite long and often misspelled you’d want to briefly become Jo or Sam.

MissPinkCakeyBun · 09/09/2020 17:23

I have used Mongoose for quite a while and it always raises a grin. My name is not spelt how it is said ans is very uncommon in the U.K. and because of this I'm endlessly called all sorts of name vaguely like mine so Mongoose it is. Also as I'm hard of hearing it's easy to pick out when it's called

MissPinkCakeyBun · 09/09/2020 17:27

Also loving the Jo & Sam analogy as that's my daughter and her partner so they legitimately say Jo and Sam when ordering GrinGrinGrin

@lurker101 not Chuka in a Starbucks?!

nikkylou · 09/09/2020 17:30

I want to....but I never think about it till I'm in the queue. Then I mentally scroll through all the names I could possibly use while waiting.

Get to the till garble out the order, they ask for a name and I go oh, erm..erm...nikkylou. As if I've never been asked a name before....

Then pay and sulk over next to Spartacus and princess to wait for my real named beverage to be ready.

But half the time my Starbucks doesnt even bother to ask for a name and just calls out the drink....

this thread just reminded me of this:

Apparently they ask you so if they can, they spell it incorrectly on purpose. Then you post it online with annoyance/laughter and it's free advertising for them

frankie001 · 09/09/2020 18:07

I always give my real name, but my drink rarely arrives with it correct on the cup.

wherethewavesarehighest · 09/09/2020 18:38

Short simple fake name because they usually get my real name wrong and then I don't recognise what they call out.

Love51 · 09/09/2020 18:46

I don't drink coffee but when I was younger and less sober, I had a taxi name. It made me feel less vulnerable. Also my real name prior to changing it when I got married sounded made up, as if other kids had made it up just to bully me. I had the most boring made up name I could muster.
Sorry to any real Sarah Kennedys out there. In this case imitation really was the sincerest form of flattery.

Davros · 09/09/2020 18:49

Totally. Dumbledore or Virginia or Britney etc

CultOfWax · 09/09/2020 18:50

I always go with Ethel or Maud... no idea why, I just do.

DappledThings · 09/09/2020 18:55

I refuse to give any name. It's a stupid system. First time I was asked for it I genuinely didn't understand. I was asked "Can I have a name for your cappuchino" and I thought she was asking me to give the actual drink a nickname. Like Katy Cappuchino or something. I just looked totally bemused and she said never mind and moved on.

I've worked in central London for 18 years so been in a multitude of very busy coffee shops. At no point has just calling out the type of drink that is ready been confusing or difficult. Asking for names is just unnecessary.

ShakeaHettyFeather · 09/09/2020 18:57

Yes, I use a fake name - my real one isn't that unusual but leads to confusion, especially when people don't have English as their first language.

Used for taxis, take-aways, coffee, random blokes in bars...

AhCheeses · 09/09/2020 19:08

This is going to become the new 'putting the divider on the conveyor belt at the check out', isn't it!? 😁
We'll all start spotting MNers by their insane names and giving each other that knowing nod...

Ghostlyglow · 09/09/2020 19:16

I thought everyone gave a fake name.

Grin this has properly tickled me Grin

LionessRoar · 09/09/2020 19:24

Haha, I love some of these answers. I think I need to think of something a little more creative in the future

Never give a fake name
The staff honestly don't give a shit they just want people to get their drinks. I find it really odd behaviour. But know a lot of people do it. I just don't understand why. What do you think will come of them having your name?

BashfulClam · 09/09/2020 19:26

Two girls at work we’re drinking Starbucks brought in by a bloke in our team during overtime the cups said ‘bawbag’ and ‘fannybaws’ (Glaswegian humour) I always wonder how he got them to write that on them!

JacobReesMogadishu · 09/09/2020 19:26

Oh God I do this. Because they seem uNable to spell or pronounce my name and get really confused if I tell them my real one.

Apart from once I gave my false name at the till......hadn’t spotted the lad making the drinks was a student of mine. Who looked very confused when he shouted out my fake name and I stepped forward! 😂🙈

Mumtumwobble · 09/09/2020 19:27

Never. It’s genuinely never occurred to me to give a fake name. Maybe I’ll start.

Strokethefurrywall · 09/09/2020 19:32

Hahaha I'm gurgling with laughter here.

Fuck giving a fake name for myself (which I've never done because I've not been to a coffee shop in well over a year!), but next time I do I'm absolutely going to name my drink:

I do like an Americano so maybe I'll call my drink Erica because it's true that "you can't spelt America without Erica..." (stranger things nerd)

Filter coffee can just be Phil-ter coffee
Latte can me Charlatte...

Fuck me I could go on forever...
