Moisturiser is a conspiracy.

Chatting with DH this morning, I pointed out he had a small bit of dried skin on his face and offered to put a dab of moisturiser on it. He recoiled in horror and said "I've never used, and never will use that stuff!" With such disgust in his voice.

Upon further questioning he revealed that moisturiser is designed to clogs your pores, so that you get spots, so that you spend money on spot creams, so that women spend money on makeup, etc. He claimed the whole skincare industry is a conspiracy where they create products that give us bad skin, so that we spend more money on products to mask it.

I laughed and he said the jokes on me in the long run. I favour Elemis skincare products so the evil masterminds are profiting wildly off meGrin

I never use it on myself but do on my son who has very dry skin. I never feel the lack of it.

SparklyBookcase · 08/09/2020 15:24

I use (very cheap) moisturiser every day. It definitely makes my skin feel better and doesn’t clog pores/create spots.
I do agree with your DH though that there is a lot of ‘Emperor's New Clothes’ in the skincare industry, but you pays your money and takes your choice.

Justjoinedforthis · 08/09/2020 15:30

My mum told me night cream is a con, as it’s during the night your skin makes its own oil, and if you use night cream it loses this ability. I stopped using it and I reckon she is totally right!

I think your husband is secretly bitter about your choice of expensive face products and is using reverse psychology on you to stop buying Elemis Grin

RantAndDec · 08/09/2020 15:43

If I forget to moisturise before bed, my skin does create more natural oil. So I agree with your husband. But I still moisturise.

ColleagueFromMars · 08/09/2020 15:45

That's hilarious!

Remember clearasil? I'm convinced that using paint stripper on your face makes it produce more oil. And I get blocked pores very easily from moisturiser (and I sweat more... so attractive) so I don't use it on my face often at all. I hope this doesn't put me in the same category as your OH, as my reaction is one of a normal person Wink

mrbob · 08/09/2020 15:49

I agree with him. Like lip balm. If you start using it then your lips get all chapped when you stop. If you never use it they are fine.
I sometimes put moisturiser on when my skin gets super dry in winter. Makes no difference. In summer I don’t put it on and my skin is fine Confused

RelaisBlu · 08/09/2020 15:57

My DH also thinks there is a conspiracy going on - he thinks the content of all moisturisers is essentially the same cheap stuff but it is packaged more or less expensively for different ends of the market Grin

I get chapped lips every now and then, use a nivea chapstick for a couple of days and then it's better! I've never found chapsticks to do anything other than rectify the issue!

I never ever used lipbalms. Used to laugh at those who did.

Until I became menopausal and all my mucous membranes dried up completely. Now I have a lip balm in the pocket of everything I wear.
Batshitbeautycosmeticsltd · 08/09/2020 16:00

I never use it. Everything else gives me spots and I had to use Roaccutane in my 20s to get rid of acne. I do not have oily skin, either.

God I wish the menopause was a conspiracy theory 😞

Moisturisers can give a temporary and transient visual improvement to the skin in the moment but studies have proven that they do not reduce ageing - unless high sun block.

CorianderLord · 08/09/2020 16:07

... I mean I have eczema and can assure him that without moisturising serveral times a day my skin cracks and bleeds.

Some bad moisturisers can clog the skin but not an easy non-comodogenic one. Moisturiser just traps water in the skin.

@Justjoinedforthis your skin behaves, and produces oil, exactly the same at night as in the day. However night cream is gross and I just use a serum and my normal cream.

CorianderLord · 08/09/2020 16:08

Oh and it behaved the same way when I was a kid before I used skincare so it's not because I've used too much emollient

SimonJT · 08/09/2020 16:24

You’re married to a monster.

My cheeks crack if I don’t moisturise and I get visible rough patches of dry skin on my forehead etc.

Somanysocks · 08/09/2020 17:21

I suspect your dh is right and moisturisers aren't anti-ageing, but I'm too scared to test it out in case I wake up one day looking like a scrunched up tissue.

Plussizejumpsuit · 08/09/2020 19:20

Cool so dh mansplained something and that make it so. Can you get him to mamsplain some other shit I could do without? You can Puck I'm sure you have an idea what we could do away with as woman kind! Is he normally this obnoxious?

Sheknowsaboutme · 08/09/2020 20:03

I use coconut oil and Nivea on my skin. Its clear and soft!

You're very lucky. I had dire acne. I got rid of it but I still cannot put a thing on my skin at all or it will come out in boil-type cysts. EVERYTHING causes this. I can't even use sunscreens, I just stay out of the sun. I can't use any makeup other than on my eyes or lips. I don't even cleanse, I just use a wet flannel.
