Is this still happening? My DS starts school next week and I had heard that they were still free but a friend seems to think that has been stopped?

Yes (assuming you are in England, it might not be the same in all of the uk)

It should be. It definitely is at our school. Free School Meals for all those in Reception, Year 1 & Year 2.

Yes but you still have to register children in our authority.

Free school meals for infant children is called universal school meals, available to reception, y1 and y2. No need to apply, fill in forms etc. School give it automatically if you tell them you are dinners

Free school meals for other ages require forms to be filled in and are for those on low income, certain benefits, looked after children etc.

If you are universal and qualify under the free school meals rules, inform the school, you still get the same meal for free but the government pays for the meal instead of the school. So it helps the school's finances.

Maybe your friends miss remembering, and she heard that the FSM vouchers that were given over lockdown were stopped at the beginning of summer. And she's conflicted the two things.
