I've had them in restaurants before and they've been nice, but every time I cook them at home they just taste bland. Any ideas?

Butter and salt.

Mixingitall · 07/09/2020 13:14

Butter
Chilli flakes and lime is also nice

I think it depends where they are bought from, some are tasteless.

I pan fry with some garlic (and a bit of bacon if I have any!) not sure how healthy that makes them though. Taste better though

Sauté in butter and garlic? Or, as my granny used to do, boil them to hell with several pieces of ham/bacon.

mrsmarkgruffalo · 07/09/2020 13:17

Thank you all. I've not tried adding butter so will give that a go and if not then garlic next time. Bacon sounds nice too. Do you boil them before you pan fry Delatron?

Add them to a chilli.

Lalanbaba · 07/09/2020 13:19

Roast them and season with garlic, salt and pepper.
Or make a based tomato sauce with some lardons and add the green beans just blanched for a minute previously.

OpenlyGayExOlympicFencer · 07/09/2020 13:23

Stir fried with chopped garlic and sesame seeds.

Delatron · 07/09/2020 13:27

@mrsmarkgruffalo no I just pan fry them without boiling first. They stay a little crunchy but that’s nice!

DiscombobulatedAf · 07/09/2020 13:32

Butter, onion powder, garlic and a tiny bit of lime juice. I sometimes use vegan sriracha mayo as well which makes them taste divine

sqirrelfriends · 07/09/2020 14:03

My mil steams them and then finishes off in a frying pan with garlic and butter. They are just amazing.

I'm lazy and microwave mine and just add powdered garlic and butter at the end, very nice as well but much quicker.

ExtremelyBoldSquirrels · 07/09/2020 14:10

Butter and loads of pepper also improves them quite a lot.

Ihatemyseleffordoingthis · 07/09/2020 14:13

a la greque

splash of olive oil in pan
3 chopped garlic cloves
big tomato/handful of cherry tomatoes
handful beans, whizz them all around until tomatoes and beans soften

otherwise never boil them, only blanch them and serve with oil or butter

Wheresthebiffer2 · 07/09/2020 14:13

tomato ketchup

SeasonallySnowyPeasant · 07/09/2020 14:16

Steam them, add a dollop of crème fraiche, chopped sundried tomatoes and mix. Serve with crispy bacon or grilled prosciutto. 👌

VespaNight · 07/09/2020 14:17

Don't over cook them and add a little salt (fleur de sel if you have it) once they are on the plate.

mrsmarkgruffalo · 07/09/2020 14:22

Thanks Delatron. I'm definitely going to try that

Thanks everyone for the brilliant ideas and help Flowers

In my experience shop bought ones are always bland, homegrown are absolutely delicious, like a different food altogether!

hipityhipityhop · 07/09/2020 14:33

Steam them. Always nicer than boiling

GirlCalledJames · 07/09/2020 14:34

Fry them cover to steam cook them.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 07/09/2020 14:41

Chop some garlic, add to olive oil, cook gently - don't let the garlic burn.
Meanwhile, dunk the beans in boiling water for a couple of minutes.
Drain the beans. Mix the beans with the garlic & oil. Squirt some lemon juice over & serve.
Quick and tasty.

(like the idea of adding bacon bits, mmm!)

PenguindreamsofDraco · 07/09/2020 15:22

Butter and sprinkle of Aromat.

Morred · 07/09/2020 15:27

The answer is always butter. If I have other veg on, I steam them slightly then put them in a pan with a little knob of butter and a big squeeze of instant garlic (if you're having boiled potatoes, cut in half and toss in the 'sauce' too). If I'm not steaming/boiling other stuff, I just stick them in a frying pan with the butter/garlic.

pinkfruits · 07/09/2020 15:31

I really like green beans, sometimes I cook them in soy sauce and they are very nice

Doilooklikeatourist · 07/09/2020 15:31

More salt then you think to boil them in
Then , when still al dente , drain and toss in olive oil , butter , sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
