So we're moving to Yorkshire next year (after dd has done her GCSEs).
Please tell me why you love Yorkshire, and your favourite places to be, things to do.
We haven't decided on where yet either and can be relatively flexible, so where would you recommend/avoid?
I have been to Yorkshire a lot but living somewhere is obviously very different to visiting mates for a weekend!

Yorkshire is a MASSIVE place! I live in North Yorkshire (in the small city of Ripon) and adore it. Also love Harrogate and Knaresborough and York, and Scarborough and Whitby for a more built-up place. Personally I'm not a West Yorkshire fan as it's a lot more heavily populated and less rural/seasidey.

Duvetstay · 06/09/2020 19:26

Congratulations! Yorkshire is fab. Big place though and covers all bases from middle of nowhere to very urban.

Whereabouts will the job be based?

What is your budget?

Do you like city / total rural isolation / suburbs?

uggmum · 06/09/2020 19:30

I love in Yorkshire. Grew up in London and moved up in my late teens.

Great value housing. Leeds is a fab city. Lots of open space. Excellent quality schools and further education. Transport links are good too.

Ask me anything. I am in the Wakefield area

GeordieRacer · 06/09/2020 19:32

Yorkshire has a lot of brilliant places but it's huge and has a real diversity of areas depending on what you're looking for. Have you narrowed it down at all in you head? Urban, rural?

BrandoraPaithwaite · 06/09/2020 19:35

You have got pretty much every option open to you... Total rural solitude, big city excitement, stunning coast, olde worlde, super modern living. Flat lands, hills, moor. Top mega bucks budget or incredibly cheap housing.

Can you tell us more about what your family needs/ wants in terms of commutes, work, education, preferences for leisure? Yorkshire will have what you want.

Parkandride · 06/09/2020 19:38

It's so big and diverse, there's something for everyone: cities, beaches, moors, mountains, dales. 3 national parks, good transport links, busy multicultural towns to absolute peace and quiet. I love it. Totally depends what you want as to where will suit as its huge

Always love this video, captures the variety on offer so well. Does anything take your fancy?
Happy moving!

WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat · 06/09/2020 19:39

To be honest I think tha gravy that makes it taste so good.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 06/09/2020 19:43

I've lived in South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire and North Yorkshire. Loved the different areas for different reasons. Mostly small things... Like honesty boxes to put your parking money in (no wardens or tickets). The range of places. The fresh air. Not having to sell a piece of your body to be able to afford a house.

Not particularly fond of the lack of public transport in rural areas.

FlabbyPirate · 06/09/2020 19:45

I've lived in both North and West Yorkshire if I had the resources it would be North Yorkshire everytime. Knaresborough, Ripon and Harrogate are great places to live. As is York... West Yorkshire places to live I'd say are;
Ossett
Gomersal
Wakefield
Penistone
Haworth

AWiseWomanOnceSaidFuckThisShit · 06/09/2020 19:53

I am so jealous!

ClaraBean · 06/09/2020 19:57

We're pretty flexible with location. We're down in Brighton at the moment, we're moving to Yorkshire so the kids can be closer to their Dad (who is Scottish, and just moved back to Scotland)
Nothing too rural as I want the teenagers to be able to find things to do, and be able to be slightly independent in getting around to meet new friends.
So really this is just in the first stages of planning. Choosing some areas to go and visit and get a feel for. We're living the look of Scarborough, already like Leeds
We will be renting for at least a few years, DP is self employed so would have to spend a bit of time re establishing his business so budget of £1000/1200 a month at the very tops but preferably less so we can save to buy.

I grew up near Ilkley. You have amazing countryside on your doorstep yet only about 25 minutes on the train to Leeds.

North Yorkshire is more beautiful. Harrogate is lovely.

Prefer Whitby to Scarborough if you’re looking at coastal towns!

HermioneWeasley · 06/09/2020 20:25

Leeds if you want teenagers to have stuff they can access without you ferrying them everywhere

kidsdrivingmemad · 06/09/2020 20:29

I'd recommend somewhere near Leeds for teenagers. I live in between Leeds and Bradford, both 10 minutes away and country side and woods on my doorstep.

user1471453601 · 06/09/2020 20:37

Yorkshire born and bred. But you need to steel yourself for the Yorkshire attitude. A spade is indeed called a spade, sometimes it's even called a fucking shovel. eg, when taking my new born to see aunt and uncle, after the required ohhing and arhing, uncle said "what possessed you to call child that?.". Serious question.

bill Bryson, who lived in Yorkshire for a while said in his book Notes from a small island, "you can always tell a Yorkshire man, but you cannot tell him much"

It's not that we are rude, I think we just expect honesty, so we give honesty. Maybe. Or possibly, we are rude, I don't know.

BrandoraPaithwaite · 06/09/2020 20:38

For your renting budget you'll get somewhere nice and have the flexibility to try out a few places before committing to buy.
I recommend you rent in north leeds firstly and explore from there. You'll love it!
Starting points to scope out rentals- roundhay, chapel allerton, ilkley, Otley, menston, horsforth, farsley

Bluebellbike · 06/09/2020 20:45

They don't call it God's own country for nothing. The best place in the world.

GeordieRacer · 06/09/2020 21:11

I like Scarborough personally but it's quite run down so depends what you are looking for. With your criteria and budget you might want to look at York itself, North Leeds, Harrogate, Skipton, Ilkley

Dowser · 06/09/2020 21:13

Certainly is. I live half the year here and half on north east coast.
We do half a week here, 4 nights and 3 at home, March to end of November.
This weekend we’ve been to Helmsley lovely place, people are friendly.
Harrogate, that’s very nice. A lot bigger and I imagine plenty to do for teens.
Thirsk today for a lovely carvery lunch as it was raining.. Lovely old fashioned market town.

I chat to one of the market traders at Helmsley and ripon market . He’s from Blackburn, Bolton, bury area. He has over a 100 mile commute and says it never ceases to amaze him that when shopkeepers finish here for the night, they shut the door, turn the key and off they go.
Where he’s from they pull the shutters down as well.
It like stepping back in time here he said.
So true..
Personally I wouldn’t go to Scarborough. I’d go rural but within an hour of the coast.
York is lovely, plenty on going on there ..usually in pre covid times.
Leeds busy, busy , busy.
Teens will love it.

SomewhereEast · 06/09/2020 21:16

I live in a certain pretty market town in the East Riding and broadly speaking love it. Upsides: miles of countryside & coast, very affordable, pretty friendly, God's own country in summer, the town we live is lovely. Downsides: Bit out on a limb, less to do in winter (although our town is pretty good for amenities and York & Lincoln & even Leeds are pretty doable - Hull has alot less going on than a city its size should though), definitely requires a car, probably much better for children than teens. Has real pockets of deprivation in places like Hull and Brid. Also some places can be really introverted. Our town is really popular with incomers (has a slight York's Most Eastern Suburb vibe) and I found it easy to make friends, but there are places where no one has moved in or out since the dawn of time. I'm guessing Scarborough would be ok simply because of its size, but wouldn't be 100% sure. Bridlington a bit further south has a well-deserved reputation as God's Waiting Room because of all the retirees there too...I honestly don't know if Scarborough has the same issue, but it might. Its not exactly a hub of diversity here. There are definitely immigrants (like me), but we tend to be immigrants from elsewhere in Europe. There are pockets of UKIPness along the coast (Brid again...basically just avoid Brid Grin) but in my experience its mostly no worse than the south-east.

Hope that helps!

BrandoraPaithwaite · 06/09/2020 21:22

Another thought... there are beautiful little villages in the high hills around Bradford and Bingley. Absolutely picturesque Bronte type country and easy access to cosmopolitan cities of Leeds and Bradford. Also good colleges, 6th forms and uni opportunities for your DCs.

NotMeNoNo · 06/09/2020 21:30

One of my relatives lived in Scarborough until recently . It's a LONG road along the A64 to the coast I've driven it many times. She loved it there though, it's pretty down to earth but seemed very much an all year town. I don't even live there but DH is a proud Yorkshireman. If we had the opportunity to move there we would in a moment.

NotMeNoNo · 06/09/2020 21:32

To Yorkshire I mean. Not Scarborough specifically!

BrandoraPaithwaite · 06/09/2020 21:34

Saltburn on sea. Not technically Yorkshire, it's in Redcar & Cleveland but it's in the North Yorkshire coast line area. Best beach on that coast, super affordable and a nice little town with an arty scene.

EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire · 06/09/2020 21:35

Because every planet has one Grin.

Also York is the prettiest city in the world. Fact.
