So we're moving to Yorkshire next year (after dd has done her GCSEs).
Please tell me why you love Yorkshire, and your favourite places to be, things to do.
We haven't decided on where yet either and can be relatively flexible, so where would you recommend/avoid?
I have been to Yorkshire a lot but living somewhere is obviously very different to visiting mates for a weekend!

From Yorkshire. Avoid Wakefield - sadly it has been let down by a succession of councils and governments and has been left to rot. Zero investment, zero town planning. It breaks my heart in the town centre to see a once thriving market city in that state. It has been forgotten.
Leeds has good parts, but honestly if it were me, I'd go to a place where the council gives a shit about residents - so Ripon, York, Harrogate, (Redcar is indeed lovely), Saltaire, Hebden bridge...

lakesidefall · 06/09/2020 22:13

I've worked in Scarborough but wouldn't live there due to drug issues and the not inconsiderable number of child sex offenders who get placed there.
( obviously not all Scarborough is part of this but there are significant social issues in parts)

There are lots of bits of Yorkshire I have or would live in, York and it's villages being my favorite.

chomalungma · 06/09/2020 22:15

Yorkshire is a great place. Lots of variety and lovely countryside.
North Yorkshire is the best county in it. Dales, Moors.

Wouldn't really put Scarborough as a place to live if I had to choose somewhere to live in Yorkshire.

There are some very expensive parts of Yorkshire. We were in Harrogate yesterday - and I was surprised at the number of estate agents just on one street.

endoflevelbaddy · 06/09/2020 22:15

A lot of Yorkshire coastal towns might be a bit too quiet and rural (and some run down) to keep teens entertained.
North Yorkshire is beautiful, but can be tricky with public transport outside of the main towns.
I grew up in Mirfield, West Yorkshire. Great for commuting (can get trains directly to Leeds and London, as well as good motorway links). Can be on the coast in 90 mins, Leeds in 20, York / Harrogate / Manchester in ~1 hr and in woods / country walks on foot.
Have a look for the Yorkshire Monopoly board - it might give you some inspiration Grin

sensiblesometimes · 06/09/2020 22:16

Beautiful countryside . moors , mountains, forests , rolling hills , beautiful coasts .
lovely friendly people x

BrandyandBabycham · 06/09/2020 22:29

I have never lived in Yorkshire but feel my heart is there. My maternal Grandparents lived in Halifax & I loved the countryside round there. But I don’t think you can beat The Dales. Just beautiful.

GlummyMcGlummerson · 06/09/2020 22:31

The people
The shops
The small towns like Knaresborough, so many character
The accents (I'm from NY so biased though Grin)
The Dales

You can NEVER be bored in Yorkshire

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 06/09/2020 22:33

Try Beverley, just outside Hull
It's a fab place and has easy links to great uni, cities, coast, country sides.

YorkshireParentalPerson · 06/09/2020 22:41

I'm Yorkshire born and bred, lived outskirts of Leeds, eat Yorkshire and now Sheffield. North Yorkshire had plenty to offset if your in to the great big outdoors, the Yorkshire wolds are lovely. However east Yorkshire is in the arse end of nowhere, beautiful to visit but wouldn't want to live there (my parents do and you have to travel for everything). I love Sheffield. A large city with a small town feel. Plenty to see and do, great rail links and 15 minutes from the derbyshire dales.

Nix32 · 06/09/2020 22:42

We're in East Yorkshire. It's an easy commute to Hull, York or Scarborough. The coast is 20 minutes away, the North Yorkshire moors about 50 minutes. Great housing prices. Moved up from the south and have no intention of going back!

LunaNorth · 06/09/2020 22:46

@SomewhereEast

I live in a certain pretty market town in the East Riding and broadly speaking love it. Upsides: miles of countryside & coast, very affordable, pretty friendly, God's own country in summer, the town we live is lovely. Downsides: Bit out on a limb, less to do in winter (although our town is pretty good for amenities and York & Lincoln & even Leeds are pretty doable - Hull has alot less going on than a city its size should though), definitely requires a car, probably much better for children than teens. Has real pockets of deprivation in places like Hull and Brid. Also some places can be really introverted. Our town is really popular with incomers (has a slight York's Most Eastern Suburb vibe) and I found it easy to make friends, but there are places where no one has moved in or out since the dawn of time. I'm guessing Scarborough would be ok simply because of its size, but wouldn't be 100% sure. Bridlington a bit further south has a well-deserved reputation as God's Waiting Room because of all the retirees there too...I honestly don't know if Scarborough has the same issue, but it might. Its not exactly a hub of diversity here. There are definitely immigrants (like me), but we tend to be immigrants from elsewhere in Europe. There are pockets of UKIPness along the coast (Brid again...basically just avoid Brid Grin) but in my experience its mostly no worse than the south-east.

Hope that helps!

I think we might live in the same town. Gateway to the Wolds?
amieejust · 06/09/2020 22:50

I love Yorkshire. Beautiful countryside, interesting cities and villages, straight talking but friendly people.

Great food too, especially curry and fish & chips!

North Yorkshire probably my favourite part.

H1978 · 06/09/2020 23:02

Lived in Yorkshire all my like, couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. It’s got some beautiful countryside and in my opinion the nicest people but I’m hugely biased Grin

MovingtoEssex · 06/09/2020 23:50

Another one who grew up near ilkley here.
Good option for teens.
Excellent secondary school.
Trains to Leeds and Bradford.
Edge of the yorkshire Dale's for scenery.
Otley a little cheaper.
Skipton way also a little cheaper.
North york moors properly remote (just drove from Scotland across a66 - views for miles).
I love every trip back up north.

Flymetothetoon · 06/09/2020 23:58

@FlabbyPirate

I've lived in both North and West Yorkshire if I had the resources it would be North Yorkshire everytime. Knaresborough, Ripon and Harrogate are great places to live. As is York... West Yorkshire places to live I'd say are; Ossett Gomersal Wakefield Penistone Haworth
Penistone is South Yorkshire
Walkerbean16 · 07/09/2020 01:04

Scarborough is nice for a visit but I wouldn't want to live there!

user1471565182 · 07/09/2020 03:07

I love easts and North Yorkshire, west and South feel like different countries to me. You can talk to anybody you want and have every type of british landscape you could need. And I think we have the best dogs.

user1471565182 · 07/09/2020 03:07

I seem to remember Redcar and boro was actually North Yorkshire before the boundary changes.

ListenLinda · 07/09/2020 03:13

@kidsdrivingmemad i think you live near me :) i’m surrounded by green space, but a busy transport link. 5 min drive and i’m in Leeds. I love it

user1471565182 · 07/09/2020 03:27

I was going to suggest Beverley and sounds like theres a few beverley people on here.

PhilCornwall1 · 07/09/2020 04:58

Me and my wife absolutely love Yorkshire and would drop everything here to move there. Pre this bloody virus, I would travel to Leeds and other places often for work. We've also had some great holidays in Yorkshire too, staying in a lovely barn in between Skipton and Ilkley and have travelled all over Yorkshire from there.

I really do like the people, I find them very friendly (nicer than our bloody locals!!) and the scenery, it's stunning!!

Our ideal would be a place that's semi-rural.

Ormally · 07/09/2020 10:33

I agree regarding the gravy. Also pies, I like (and miss!) them.

I was also going to say Ilkley like a PP, good and pretty reliable train links and if you can insulate yourself sufficiently, there is a brilliant lido there which I remember fondly (though, genuinely, always coldly) from teenage years. Would have been lovely in the heatwave although maybe not open. Great for riding which was also my teenage 'thing'. I also love the villages round Bradford but would find them a bit remote to live there if a teenager, and maybe a bit more there for older people (not really old, just older)! Some smaller places round Sheffield look good too, a colleague moved there. Still easy to get around and with choices of connections, including the trams, but up a steep hill and you are right in the moors.

Very fond of York but when I have been there recently it seems to take on a different character at night - bouncers everywhere, queues to get in everywhere, some bars want you to be standing only, and very much for the student-20s group (I am probably harking back to a mythical nostalgic time though, or basically getting old).

Bluesheep8 · 07/09/2020 10:46

Personally I'm not a West Yorkshire fan as it's a lot more heavily populated and less rural/seasidey.

Well I'm in West Yorkshire and its most definitely rural!

romany4 · 07/09/2020 14:34

I'm in a rural village between Wakey and Huddersfield. It's beautiful

garlictwist · 07/09/2020 14:39

Scarborough town centre is a bit run down. It wouldn't be my first choice. I've never been to Brighton but I imagine it's nothing like that if you're after coastal.

I think Leeds is the best city if you want urban. Fairly green, excellent transport links, on the motorways, great access to the Yorkshire Dales, the Lakes, the Peaks or the North York Moors if you want national parks within an hour or two.
