So we're moving to Yorkshire next year (after dd has done her GCSEs).
Please tell me why you love Yorkshire, and your favourite places to be, things to do.
We haven't decided on where yet either and can be relatively flexible, so where would you recommend/avoid?
I have been to Yorkshire a lot but living somewhere is obviously very different to visiting mates for a weekend!

"North york moors properly remote (just drove from Scotland across a66 - views for miles).

That's not the NYM - that's the Pennines, and mostly in Cumbria.

I love my corner of Yorkshire, but it never comes up on threads like these - Ryedale!

It’s got lovely market towns - Malton is really thriving, excellent foodie scene and good schools - beautiful countryside and gorgeous villages.

Perhaps wouldn’t be the best place with teens, but it would be my choice any day over the go to recommended areas of Knaresborough and Harrogate.

With teens I’d go for central York - I’ve not lived there a while but you should be able to find somewhere nice and central for your budget and there are lots of good school sixth forms and a well regarded college.

Barnsley chop :)

I was born in Halifax, have lived in The Dales and now live near Redcar. If you want access to Scotland look towards N York's, you can go straight up the A1 to the east or zip accross the A66 to the M6 and west. York, Northallerton and Thirsk are on the East Coast Mainline and you can get a Glasgow train from York or Darlington if you are further North.

Personally, I'd avoid the coast, it's beautiful to look at but Whitby in particular gets rammed and it is difficult to "live" there rather than be a tourist. In Scarborough, it will take you a long time to get anywhere. If I were you, I'd look at York.

Parts of W Yorks are nice (some are really not) and with somewhere like Halifax you are equidistant for Leeds/Manchester but that might be a bit more tricky for Scotland

Yorkshire is a great place to live.

Have a look at Malton - lovely, busy market town in a great location - 25 minutes to the coast, York, the Moors and not much further to Leeds/Hull/Beverley.

Well I'm a bit torn, a chap in the office said Lancashire is a lot nicer.

Any views out there on that?

I loved from Harrogate area to London and honestly I miss the AIR. It's fresh and cold and cuts into your lungs. I feel like I'm choking down here.

Pubs are fantastic and lots of great beers to try.

North Yorkshire is absolutely beautiful. I’ve only holidayed there so couldn’t give you advice on where best to live but it’s gorgeous. My happy place. We recently stayed in Great Ayton in Guisborough and it was a brilliant location to get around. I did a Rightmove stalk on the area and it’s reasonably priced.

CorianderLord · 07/09/2020 21:14

I would also recommend Harrogate/York/ Wetherby.

Knaesborough can be fiddly with public transport so not great for kids. Scarborough is quite run down.

@LunaNorth

If i got your clue right, we are moving to where you live next week!

Grew up in a suburb of leeds and now live over the pennines. We've got a caravan in pateley bridge so over there alot. The countryside is so varied, from rolling hills and farmland to austere moors and sheep, so much to see and do ( and hate to say it but more than back where we live !), ruined abbeys, castles, riverside walks....
I'm due to retire in a few years and am hoping to move back once youngest ds hopefully goes to uni. My family are from york and pock originally. Been to pocklington in particular quite alot and am seriously considering moving there when the time is right !

If dad is in Scotland I'd be looking at the towns will good rail links so the kids can travel on their own (or will be able to in the future).

I was forced to move out of Yorkshire age 9 but have visited and been back on holiday over the years. I love Scarborough but as a teen I think Leeds might be better.

Best move you’ll ever make. Cracking little town. I hope you’ll be very happy here.
