Help with corner sofa placement in room

We really need additional seating. We have one 3seater at the moment and a Poang Ikea armchair which is on its last legs.

We both want a large full corner sofa (ie no open ended lounger parts, a full back all the way around and proper arms on each end). The bigger the better.

However we are debating which layout works best.

Option 1 - my choice. Leaves window and radiator accessible. We have long floor length curtains and it's the only radiator in the room although we only use it in the dead of winter. Also better for tv viewing.i feel it makes the room more squared off rather than Option 2 which I think makes the room look odd.

Option 2 - dh choice. He doesn't like the idea of the sofa coming out into the room and having to walk around it. He also says there's more room for additional seating around the coffee table. I think it would make viewing the tv difficult as everyone on one side would sit looking sideways.

please note we cannot move the tv. There are no sockets on the other side where the shelving is. We also cannot relocate the radiator. The room is pretty much 5m square and has hugh ceilings so I don't think either option will make the room feel too small.

Which one do you think works best?

Option 2, with a new Poang for watching TV.

I prefer option 2 as well. Makes the room look more balanced and frees up a corner for an easy chair by the shelving.

Option 2

I'd do option 2 but bring it out away from the wall so a walkway around the back and in front of the window. Not sure if that'd work with angle if the TV though? We have a big corner sofa like you want and we have it in the middle of the room not up against any walls

CeeceeBloomingdale · 06/09/2020 16:20

I prefer option 2. How many people would be sitting on he sofa watching tv?

trickyex · 06/09/2020 16:21

Option 2 looks better and more balanced.
Add a bean bag for extra seating?

ivfbeenbusy · 06/09/2020 16:23

Option 2 100%

HeronLanyon · 06/09/2020 16:26

I would prefer option 1 but depending on how high the arms are, option 2 gives you a good lying down watching tv opportunity.
Actually I still prefer option 1. I always like divided spaces like that. Also option 2 blocks the radiator - would that cause problems. ??

CloudSingsAloud · 06/09/2020 16:26

Option 2, especially if you have young DC, more floor space. Bean bags for extra tv seating.

If the sofa is in units as you've drawn it, then I would move the middle bit or end bit you have in front of the window to the other side when you want to have the radiator on.

Stompythedinosaur · 06/09/2020 16:30

Option 2 is better, but i think you'd be better off with a corner sofa with 4 seats along the back (and either 1 or 2 in front of the window) for easier TV viewing

BalloonSlayer · 06/09/2020 16:30

I am being the irritating poster who says what about a three seater and a two seater ( or 2 3 seaters) each against a wall with nothing on it.

Fatted · 06/09/2020 16:33

I know you said you can't move the TV, but personally I would go with option two and run extension cables to where the shelves are. Or hang the TV on what I'm assuming is the the chimney wall.

We had a similar room lay out in an old house and despite wanting a corner sofa at the time, we just couldn't get it to work. We opted instead for a three seater and two seater.

User45 · 06/09/2020 16:34

Option two and don't let the sockets prevent you from loving to table. Just run the cables along the skirting board clipped down for neatness

paintmegood · 06/09/2020 16:37

Option two. We have a sofa under the window and the tv in that position and it's usually used by the person who wants to lounge with their legs up.

Don't put the tv above the fireplace as previously suggested, it always looks so awful!

Namechange8471 · 06/09/2020 16:37

Option 2. Option one just looks messy

GoatsInBoats · 06/09/2020 16:37

I’d go option 2, but ONLY if you were getting an additional chair for the empty space in front of the shelves. Otherwise, option 1.

HollowTalk · 06/09/2020 17:30

It's not expensive to get new sockets fitted.

HollowTalk · 06/09/2020 17:30

Can you watch tv if your back is to the window?

BashfulClam · 06/09/2020 17:33

Option 2 to give you more room.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/09/2020 17:34

Option 1. Its nice to be able to gaze out of the window while sitting down.

BashfulClam · 06/09/2020 17:34

Option 1 means you have to come in and walk around the sofa which is daft.

Satsuma2 · 06/09/2020 17:36

Option one for me. Option two looks like everything is pushed to the corner. In reality it may be okay.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 06/09/2020 17:40

No option to run an extension as the chimney breast has an open fire. Also we had the tv on the wall in the last house and I hated it.

We only really use the room for tv and movie watching - we have alternative space for play. Which is why I'm hesitant to do option 2 as we can't sit on the "radiator" side and stare sideways all evening.

I like option 1! I don’t buy into the idea that all furniture has to hug walls so agree with @Satsuma2, or that there is an issue with walking round furniture to access it. I also agree with @OhYouBadBadKitten about looking out of the window.
Is there room for a slim console table behind the sofa (non wall bit) to pop a lamp on? Also, you can probably still have a small chair in the shelving corner depending on the dimensions of the room

CormoranStrike · 06/09/2020 18:21

Option two for me
