If you were going to Venice, where would you stay?

I am bewildered by the choice of amazing looking hotels with amazing views (though appreciate individual rooms may not share those views).

If you’ve been to Venice or are planning to go, where would you stay?

Op I am a huge fan of easy jet I would never go Ryan Air ever again after several heart stopping moments and awful cs.

We’ve stayed at the Olympia hotel which was nice, small and traditional, handy for the airport and railway station but my favourite was on Murano, La gare Venezia by m gallery, they pick you up from the airport on a private boat, it’s right by a boat stop, into central Venice in 20 minutes.

Next time I plan on staying at the Papodopoli. I adore Venice, just wandering around taking it all in.

@Aridane how was your trip? How crowded was Venice? I read yesterday on a Trip Advisor forum that someone said it was very crowded.

I really hope it isn't. That is what has always put me off of going plus now with the virus I know I would not be very happy if it is crowded.

Aridane · 25/09/2020 09:29

@lynsey91 - still here in Venice and loving it!

I sent some pictures to my brother and he says it’s lot quieter than normal when St Mark’s Square would be heaving.

Maybe judge for yourself .

So here’s picture of St Mark’s Square facing the water

Up by the arsenale is nice.
I've stayed in a few different places in Venice.
Stayed in a hotel near the train station on the Strada Nova - busy!
Cannaregio is lovely.

www.cariccio.com - nice simple B&B

www.gkkvenezia.com/en/ - stayed here a few times before they became "suites".

lynsey91 · 25/09/2020 13:55

@Aridane thank you so much for posting those pictures. It looks beautiful and pretty empty so goodness knows what the person on Trip Advisor was talking about.

We go on Monday 12th October to the Friday. I swing between being really excited and being worried that Boris will announce another lock down or Italy will stop allowing tourists or even that we will have to have a test. Probably silly but I really don't want a test as a couple of people have said it is really painful.

Me and DH are both happy to isolate for 14 days on return if necessary. I don't work so easy for me and DH is self employed so can move work around.

How long are you there for? Also what is the weather like?

Aridane · 25/09/2020 14:11

Am here for a full week - courtesy of Ryanair, I had x2 bonus days as last Sunday’s flight was at 6.20am and tomorrow’s is at 11pm.

Weather is is low 70s during day and 60s during evening. Weather forecast looked awful other than first x2 days - but actually apart from x2 spectacularly heavy rain showers it’s been fine, sometimes sunny, sometimes cloudy.

If you have a sunny day, go to St Mark’s Square late afternoon when the light is mellow and everything g is bathed in a golden glow. It’s also the perfect time to go up the clock tower or the viewing gallery of the Basilica - not just the light but most people have cleared off (that’s when I took the pictures I posted)

Don’t worry too much about having a covid test if you have to have one - I had one on arrival at Madeira and whilst uncomfortable and I made disgusting gagging noises, it was over in a few seconds.

Nice also that you avoid the weekend!

(hotel told me not to visit St Mark’s Square then)

@Aridane our flights are not at such good times. Our outgoing one doesn't get to Venice until 4pm and the return one leaves Venice at 3.40pm.

The weather is certainly better than here!

Aridane · 08/10/2020 15:09

@lynsey91 - don’t know if you’ve departed yet but Italy has just announced a requirement for a negative covid test for Brits as a precondition of entry

lynsey91 · 08/10/2020 15:59

@Aridane oh no! DH read yesterday that they were likely to bring in testing on arrival next week which was already freaking me out a bit.

Just looked and the test has to be 3 days before you go. We go Monday so a bit tight. I am not sure there are available tests where I am as neighbour could not get one last week.

Looks like we won't be going. I am so sad as I was just letting myself get excited as it seemed we would be going for sure.

I doubt we will get our flight money back but we will be able to get the money for the apartment back. I literally booked the airport parking an hour ago as I was pretty sure we would be going.

Aridane · 08/10/2020 16:46

There are specialist companies that do the test and fit to fly certificates - are there any near you?

Also, at some Italy airports there is the facility to be tested on arrival And / or at a Local testing facility. Would that be an option?

OP posts:
Aridane · 08/10/2020 16:47

Have the Italy regulations already come into force? or do you have enough time to get there before they come into force?

Keep1984fiction · 08/10/2020 16:51

It says on gov website that tests are available in some airports in Italy but you would have to quarantine if you showed positive.
List of airports not on yet though so may be some hope

Keep1984fiction · 08/10/2020 17:02

Tests do seem to be available at Marco Polo Airport. They have a buffer zone where free tests are carried out.
Not 100%sure exactly what that means though if you can go on holiday if you are OK or isolate until results are available

NW2SW · 08/10/2020 17:08

Depends on the time of year? In peak summer we stayed on the Lido and it was lovely to have the best of both. Busy bustling Venice on your doorstep and an escape to the more chilled local vibe of the Lido - with a pool!

NW2SW · 08/10/2020 17:10

Blush bit behind the convo obv

Aridane · 08/10/2020 17:16

I think you isolate until you get the rest results

OP posts:
lynsey91 · 08/10/2020 20:32

@Aridane I think we could get the test at the airport but if we then have to isolate until we get the result that is no good as we are only there 5 days.

Also if either or both of us tested positive we would, obviously, have to stay there meaning more expense for accommodation and possibly problems getting food etc. Also our dogs are going to a dog sitter so not sure the sitter would want to have them for longer than arranged

Even if we went for a NHS test and you are not meant to unless you have symptoms, its unlikely we would get the results in time.

I really do not want a test so if were to have one in Italy I would just spend the flight stressing and worrying about it so we have decided not to go.

DH is still going to take the week off and we are going to carry on with decorating our house.

I think the thing that makes me more sad is not knowing when we will be likely to be able to go.
