If you were going to Venice, where would you stay?

I am bewildered by the choice of amazing looking hotels with amazing views (though appreciate individual rooms may not share those views).

If you’ve been to Venice or are planning to go, where would you stay?

Were you tempted by the poster on that other thread who said it was lovely and quiet there at the moment Aridane?! Hope you have an amazing time, v jealous!

Fingerbobs · 12/09/2020 14:23

We stayed in Canareggio and it was brilliant, really quiet but lovely restaurants etc and really not a huge distance to walk to the central places. I’d like to stay in Dorsoduro too. Oh I am envious! Have a fantastic time.

Jujuball · 12/09/2020 14:31

I stayed right next to the Rialto which was perfect for getting around everywhere Smile

Lookatthat · 12/09/2020 14:34

Definitely on the Lido! Lovely beach, less touristy than St Mark’s but super easy to get to by water bus. Lovely restaurants and ‘local’ feeling.

Ikeameatballs · 12/09/2020 14:36

Aridane can I ask who you are flying with?

Aridane · 12/09/2020 16:05

Ryan Air

@MarkRuffaloCrumble - yes, I was!!! That’s in part what inspired me - especially as Venice was one of those places I would have loved to have gone to but put off by tales of hoards Of people and price gouging. (unless going in February )

Hence this is a nice in a life opportunity.

And also why I staying near what would normally be the scrum of the Rialto Bridge

@Jujuball - can I ask where you stayed (curious as to whether it’s where I am booked!)

I'm booked for next weekend and hoping I get to go. I'm staying in Cannaregio again, prefer it there as it's less touristy, and it's only 20-30 minutes walk to St Marks Square. I stayed in a hotel behind St Marks Square in November when I dashed over to see the Aqua Alta. It was fine, worth the £75 I paid, but it's well over £200 in summer!

@Southwest12 - I’m booked for next weekend too!

It really is unbelievably beautiful , you won't be disappointed. FWIW I stayed there in November a couple of years ago and it was easy getting about on foot as there were no visitors. We covered miles without resorting to water taxis or vaporetto. We stumbled on Castello are and really liked its informality. I enjoyed Angela Hartnett in Venice on 'Remarkable Places to Eat' to give you a teaser! Also Francesco's Venice if you haven't seen it!

Cinderellashoes · 12/09/2020 17:51

We stayed at the star hotels splendid and it was gorgeous

lynsey91 · 13/09/2020 07:53

@Aridane have you booked your flights? How much did they come to?

Seeing your post about how cheap they were I decided it would be good to go in the next couple of weeks. Never been (DH has years ago) but always put off by the fact I know it will be so crowded.

I am looking at flights mid October. They come up at £18 but that is only with a take on bag and the size is tiny. We are pretty good at packing light but not sure we could take enough clothes for 4 days in such a small bag.

Once you add another bag it is an extra £20 per person each way!

Splendidseptember · 13/09/2020 08:45

Op which hotel is that, pm me if neccsary.

I've been to Venice twice. All the stuff you want to see is central and Venice is super quiet at night, so I can't understand posts saying stay outside the center!
You've made v good choice there.
Also re food, try the cichetti mentioned earlier.
In our trips we didn't actually sit down to a proper meal (and get ripped ff) we did as the locals do and went from bar to bar trying the tapas.
But of course... With covid this maybe not possible. But it's cheaper, delicious.. The old wine bars, some of them are 14 century!! So atmospheric... There is one near rialto..we went in, candles, wood everywhere and a huge Italian man, jet black hair... Humming opera to himself working on a musical score (wearing white shirt and red waist coat)...

Have fabulous time op.

Splendidseptember · 13/09/2020 08:48

Cinderella shoes, I looked at that hotel but reviews were dubious.. Is it really nice?

(I'm going again hopefully next easter)

Aridane · 13/09/2020 08:59

@lynsey91 - I didn’t pay for bags, no. Instead I payed for priority boarding so I could take both (big) wheelie bag on And 2nd small bag on. It was £14 each way - total flight still under £50.

RyanAir seem to be the only airline that doesn’t allow you the traditional wheelie bag.

Flight times work for me as I have super early outgoing flight and super late return flight, meaning I get x2 extra full days in Venice

Love the idea of cichetti bar hopping in 14th century bars.

I will be staying in a 15th century palace.

This is serious princess territory.

I will probably only go to Venice once in my lifetime and I might as well make it a memory of a lifetime. (And a celebration of Year 4 cancer free - only one more year to go before I’m officially discharged)

Op it's perfect time if year to go!! It will be beautiful, not too hot or crowded...

My favourite places to visit were dodges Palace and Peggy gugenhiem musuem...

Also read '' carneavle''book about woman who has affair with byron and cassanova.

kelper · 13/09/2020 09:53

@Aridane, would you be so kind as to message me with details of your hotel, I've ALWAYS wanted to go to Venice, but like you get totally overwhelmed with the choice of hotels!!
Hope you have a lovely time (And congrats on your 4 years!)
