Did I go into an alternate dimension in Asda today?

Dd wanted to look at the toys after we bought the school uniforms.

A small wall full of toys priced £5/£10/£15 etc, then rows and rows of toys which were all priced £XX.97.

Why .97?! I felt like I was in some sort of daydream jyst spinning round and seeing 97....97....97.....97

Why!?

Could it be to do with the Charity rounding up that some supermarkets are doing this month?
Someone's decided that a penny from £xx.99 isn't enough but people won't take part if its 5p added on?

Megan2018 · 05/09/2020 21:08

They are undercutting a competitor probably

mommybear1 · 05/09/2020 21:08

Agree with @BreakfastAtSquiffanys Tesco was the same today

Franklyfrost · 05/09/2020 21:32

That is the most boring alternate universe ever.

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 05/09/2020 21:33

It's something to do with Markdowns. The price moves to, say, £7.97p on first markdown then to another number on second markdown and on it goes.
Walmart in the US do it, so must have had Asda do the same thing. Other stores do it too. Target, Homedepot, etc.

I figured it would make an appropriate afterlife for someone who just wasn't a very nice person. Not bad enough to warrant full on hell fire, but not good enough for, you know, rainbows.

Just endless looking at identical price tickets. For eternity.

Asda fuel is usual £**.97

But every single toy? It was quite an extensive toy department, not just a single row of shelves. Not a single item was £xx.99 or £xx.15 etc.

Maybe many alternate universes are exceedingly dull, so dull that we often pop in and out of them without realising!

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 05/09/2020 21:46

Aparently Bernadette. I used to think it was all a bit odd in the US thats why I found out what was going on. An employee I knew told us about it.

SirGawain · 05/09/2020 22:04

I have noticed over many years that ASDA often price things at £XX.97. No idea why.

CeeCeeEnnEss · 05/09/2020 22:23

Just an Asda pricing strategy. It’s cheaper than x.99.

overnightangel · 05/09/2020 22:33

Asda have always done £Xx.97
